Growing your own food

June 30, 2021 3:25pm CST
Given the current economic climate, I decided to start a garden to grow produce for my household. I made the decision quite late into the growing season, so all I have planted/growing currently are tomatoes, some herbs, catnip for the cats, and sunflowers. I'm actually about to harvest my first set of leaves of basil to cook dinner with tonight! When next year comes around, I'd love to start growing things like corn, potatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, and a few more herbs like thyme and/or rosemary. I can't wait to get a big enough garden that it is sustainable and we don't have to buy from the grocery stores anymore. Anyone here into gardening? Whether new to it or if you've been doing it a while, what's in your garden? :)

Tomatoes, green onions, onion grass, mint, oxalis and taro. Of course, most of them double as my flower garden, but all of them are edible and I've been growing them for years. I hope you do well with your garden.

I had more things growing last year . . . but due to some unforeseen circumstances this year, we could only do some flowers (and we can't eat them ). However my dad gave us a potted cherry tomato and bell pepper plant that are doing well thus far, but I can't take credit for them. We have green onions growing in jars (with water) in the kitchen!

I live in the desert so not much really grows here but I am going to invest in some prickly pear. Their leaves are edible and the flowers leave a button which many of the Hispanic people here make jelly from.
