I always wanted to be a linguist and to have a job of a translator. But I never could achieve what I thought of.
From childhood I insist on my parents to avail me a coaching for it but they could not because of the lack of money.
Although they never deprived me of good schooling yet they thought that it would be a waste of money.
After completing my college I got a job and with the job it became impossible for me to fulfill my hobby.
In those days as there were no smart phones and internet so could not take the help of Google.
But now I think I should learn at least one foreign language just for my satisfaction though I know at this age I won't be able to get a job with it.
How many international languages you know?
Are you able to do what you thought of in the childhood?

I took French classes all through High School. When I worked as a hotel clerk, sometimes French Canadians would stay in the hotel. As long as they were willing to speak slowly, I could understand them and usually, make them understand me.
I still remember some of it but more of it slips away the older I get.

I thought I did quite in France. As with you, they needed to speak slowly but if they did I could mostly understand them. I'm continuing to learn French through Duolingo mainly just because I can. I love the French language - and the food of course.

@JudyEv I like the food a little bit more than the language, honestly.

I have always wished I could speak in many languages. I took 3 years each of French and Spanish but that was long ago and sadly, I retained very little.
I'm still learning English lol.
As a child, I wanted to be a Fire Fighter.
That didn't happen.

Just when I got used to something being hot it became chill... which used to mean cold.
I still use neat and cool.

I learnt French and German at school and enjoyed French the most. I am doing revising my French with Duolingo and thorougly enjoying the online lessons. It's free and I'm finding it quite easy although so far it's mostly been revision.

Though I was born in the US, my first language was Japanese, then English. My English was stronger when I started school . . . but I took Japanese every Saturday until high school (I am better at reading/writing than speaking).
I also learned Spanish in school - and heard Spanish around me all my life. I am not fluent, but could often communicate somewhat in Spanish.
In college I took Mandarin Chinese - I was better at reading/writing than speaking. By now I forgot most of it. I also taught myself some Korean.
At work, because I worked for Iranian companies, I picked up a bit of Farci.

@sjvg1976 I taught French language once good for 5 months, after that no more. I learned Spanish during college part of the course curriculum 15 units and during the graduate studies 6 units and taught Spanish to foreign students from Seoul, Korea in our university good for 2 semesters only for it was replaced by Japanese language Nepongo/ Nihongo and don't know about that language.

I have a very hard time learning languages. I was born in the United States so English is my mother tongue and moved to Israel when i was an adult and had to learn Hebrew spoke it better before the Corona but since the Corona my speaking is not so great and I hesitate and make too many mistakes. When I went to college studied for my degree I thought I found what I wanted to do but never worked in that field. Here I took a computer graphic course and worked in that area for quite some time till I no longer wanted to do it and tried something else that did not pan out so I am looking for something and have not found it yet.
