So 'What Are NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens)?'

You may've seen the recent sale of 'the NFT of Tim Berners-Lee's original source-code for Internet-browsing'? Well, CBS Sunday Morning kind of explained NFTs.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-nft-craze-non-fungible-tokens/
The way I understand it, an NFT is basically 'a certificate that says you own "the original production" of a computer-file' (like a certificate that says that your laserdisc is the one that Lady Gaga ACTUALLY FIRST-RECORDED her hit-song on (rather than one of the bazillions of its copies or -the bazillions of copies of albums she recorded later)).
How can you verify that one NFT-certificate is valid (making all the others counterfeit)? I think you do that with blockchain-technology ... one of the reasons blockchain-technology is such a huge WASTE of energy!
