You don't have to live in a country where seeing a snake is nothing special because it's also the natural habitat for these animals. You can encounter one in Europe, too, if you live near someone whose hobby it is to have a snake as a pet.
It so happened in Graz, a city in Austria (not Australia!) that a man went to the bathroom and obviously sat down on the toilet seat without looking closely into the bowl before doing so (who does?).
He learnt the hard way that he was not alone. A 1 1/2 m long python had escaped from his neighbour's flat, somehow found the toilet and the drain pipe and come up in his toilet bowl. When he sat down to do his business, it bit him in a delicate part of his body. The newspaper article isn't more precise. You're welcome to use your imagination! He was taken to hospital and examined. A python is not poisonous but the bite hurts. No major damage is mentioned in the text, but the wound had to be cleaned thoroughly.
The police was informed who called an expert for reptiles. When he tried to get the snake out of the toilet, the snake resisted. It tensed its muscles and pressed its body against the tube. It took the man some time to get it out unharmed. He washed it to clean it from bacteria it might have caught in the tube.
As the snake was in good condition and it was obvious that the owner treated the animal correctly, he was allowed to keep it.

Didja hear about the guy from Alaska?
He was using an outhouse when he was attacked from beneath. He wrote a book about it.
It was called "Bear in the Outhouse"
By Claude Bahls.

That must have been something of a schock. I'm not sure whether I would have screamed or just used a lot of swear words.
When I studied in Vienna, a bear escaped from a circus and ran through some nice neighbourhood, ate their apples and scared a lot of people. I think that might have made me swear too.

@MALUSE Wolves, bears, lynx, wolverine, foxes etc.
It's a lot of discussions about whether we should have the bigger predators. 3 young bears were just shot in illegaly in the north.
It would also have been good if we could have the same plan as the Finns and the Swedes, they're not as trigger happy as we are and it's often the same animals. They don't care for borders.

I’ve also heard of rats in a toilet. When I was a child a neighbor of ours got bit by one that was in her toilet bowl.

@MALUSE it’s frightening to think of either in the toilet.

That would be my worst nightmare lifting a toilet seat to discover one in the pan. I hate them & always check first before sitting down & usually flush before use when abroad! You could say l am 'hissterical' as opposed to hysterical!

@garymarsh6 Japan! So you haven't given up travelling to far away destinations. Japan and the Japanese culture have never fascinated me. I can't say why not.

@MALUSE I wish no sadly I have been doing grandfather duties which is so exhausting but so funny. Devil child is hilarious & a little madame. I try to speak French with her often she looks at my wife & tells her "he is off again he does not listen to me l told him l don't speak French." She will be 3 in a couple of weeks time! She is picking it up quite nicely though & the other two translate for her.
I am on a cruise to the Scottish isles at the end of the month & then to the Canaries & Madeira for Christmas & the New Year & fingers crossed Japan in April/May.

I am afraid of snakes, and I can imagine how I would react if it happened to me
A Danish girl moved into a new apartment, but it wasn't empty. The previous owner had a snake. It escaped while he was living there, and it was still there when she moved in. The snake was hiding in apartment but at least she didn't find her new "roommate" in the toilet bowl!

@MALUSE I don't remember, but the previous owner kept it illegally, so it wasn't one of the snakes that we are allowed to keep as pets.

Amazing story and the animal found someone that will take care of it. At least the man was able to recount the incident

Snakes don't particularly bother me; but I would have hated to get a bite on the behind! Good story.

Ouch! Good thing the snake wasn't poisonous.
I wonder how many people actually look into the toilet before sitting down.
