Lightning proves dangerous for those who were taking selfie

Though I heard lightning can strike one dead, striking a dozen of them while taking selfies is what shocked me.
Though Asia, as a continent, is not new to lightning. 76 people dead in one single day due to lightning has come as a shocker. Of these 76, 12 people got killed instantly where they all gathered at a watch tower atop a hill to watch the heavy rains and thunderstorms. Never did they knew that it will be their last moments of their life. So saddened by such deaths.
My heart goes out to the families of the victims.
Is taking selfies on your mobile dangerous during thunderstorms?

@DaddyEvil so the rain just suddenly fall? If that so, then it would make sense.

The report I read said the people were already at the site taking pictures of the landscape. (The site is very famous.) When the storm started the people ran into the tower to shelter from the rain. Then the lightning struck the tower killing some and hurting others badly.

@S4mmyboy No, most gadgets don't have enough metal in them to draw lightning to you.

@DaddyEvil Okk.... Was doubtful about the whole incidence, thinking was there any connection with the mobile and lightning? Since Radio waves transport data in the form of electromagnetic field. Does it attract lightning?

Your cellphone doesn't have enough metal in it to draw lightning. Tall things draw lightning. That's why you aren't supposed to stand under a tree during a thunderstorm. The tree draws the lightning and anything under it or too near to it will feel the charge.
Stay off hills, stay away from trees and stay out of unshielded structures that are taller than things around them.

@S4mmyboy Yes, that's right. Lightning bolts can have enough electricity in them to kill things or hurt them in a wide radius around the strike. Sometimes, even shielded sites aren't safe from lightning bolts.

It is dangerous and this incident has proved it. Many people have lost their lives earlier too when they acted stupid to take selfies in a dangerous situation.
