Met some local wildlife on a roadtrip

I had to crop the picture quite a lot, since I didn't bring my telephoto lens, but it should be clear enough to show the reindeer. I went driving up in the mountains, about 2 hours from where I live. My friend took pictures with her mobile phone, so she could only see a blob with vague feet. Could be anything, moose, sheep, cow stuck in the moor. Will you try to get a photo no matter what? No regards for danger or technical quality? Reindeer are pretty safe. Shouldn't call them wildlife I suppose, they're owned by someone, but they're quite shy.

You arrived to get a pretty good photo. Sometimes I take risks to get a good photo and I know I should not.

I might climb things or possibly go to close to fjord, but I would avoid moose and especially musk-ox close up. There's been quite a few tourists (mainly German for some reason) chased by musk-ox.

@marlina I will not climb on top of a mountain, but I would take some little risks to take photos of animals.

That's a beautiful picture. Here these animals are rare to see . Even in the wild life sanctuary we don't see any wild animals except deers.

Dehli is a big city, isn't it? And very busy, it would be dangerous for wild animals there. There's badgers across the street from me, they like living in town if they can find somewhere more quiet for their burrows. When I was kid, moose used to come into town, but now they stay away from the town centre.

@sjvg1976 Trondheim, third biggest city in Norway, but compared to the rest of the world, we don't really have very big cities. Oslo's the biggest, and has 700 000 inhabitants.

@Torunn yes Delhi is big and populated city. It's not possible for wild animals to roam in the city. You are from which city?

It was shedding I think, so the fur had some different colours and it doesn't really stick out like they do in the winter

I can see the reindeer but I'm really intrigued by the lovely meadow flowers.

They're lovely, aren't they? Much bigger and whiter than the same flowers in the hills around town. It's of the family Eriophorum, according to the internet called cottongrass, cotton-grass or cottonsedge. We call it myrull = moor wool, 'cause it grows on moors and is nice and fluffy like wool.

@JudyEv Oh, that's pretty! Didn't see anything like that when I was in Australia, but maybe it was the wrong time of the year. I was there in september.

@Torunn Moor wool sounds a good name for it. Our everlastings sometimes cover quite large areas but other wildflowers only appear here and there.

It would have been more difficult to spot on the brown and white background, but the green gives it away

It was looking at some other people, they tried to get closer to it, so it stood quite still and stared. Not afraid really, just not keen on too close contact.

@oahuwriter Oh no! I hope it got out again, although it was probably food in there, it's no place for wildlife. I've never seen one, I checked the picture online. Very pretty patterns.

@Torunn Wildlife is that way. You know, I went to my neighborhood store Marukai, a little zebra dove greeted me, bewildered look in the store. So I silently prayed, it finds its way back outside.

I thought reindeer were wild and not owned by people. Aren't they dangerous if they come on to the road?

Most reindeer in Europe are owned by people. It's wild reindeer on Svalbard, Iceland and a couple of herds in Norway. Most other places they're owned by the Sami. They're not tame as cows or pigs, they don't live inside and take care of themselves most of the year. They're too small to be dangerous. On the roads, the biggest danger is for the reindeer, while crashing with moose is dangerous for both the moose and the driver.

No, too many other dumb people around who get killed like that. I would guess with the reindeer looking at it, that the poor stuck thing is a reindeer.

It's a reindeer, and it's not stuck :-) A cow would have been I think, 'cause it's quite marshy, but reindeers are quite small. And have big feet, it was reindeer footprints all over the place

That's pretty interesting to know someone own them. I don't think we have reindeer here but we have deer. But you can't simply raise one as well.

The Sami have a long tradition with being reindeer herders. It's considered rude to ask how many reindeer someone owns, it's like asking how much money you have in the bank. We didn't see any herds, just the two of them. I might have to go further north to see the big herds.

Thanks :-) Nice drive, lot of picture opportunities and we avoided the rain. Which is good, we usually get drenched at some point.

It is very rare to see a Japanese tourist not to take multiple shots at things that we don't even look at most of the time.
