My country has started to use the same change of words for things that"might" look raciasts. OMG!!!
The last was a change of name of a wonderful cookie that I ate since my cildhood. All the time this cookie was called Negrita because it had a chocolate cover. It was delicious.
Now Nestle decided that the name was racist so they changed it to Chokita.
During all my childhood I was called Negra and Negrita because both of my siblings were very blond. I loved the name.
The words depend on how they are said. One of the best latin american (from Argentina) singers, Mercedes Sosa, was called "La Negra". She was proud of that.
I will not buy any Chokitas. I want my Negrita back

I think it has little to do with the color of one's skin. It's the thickness that's at fault.
Everyone is offended at everything.
Even one of the responders to this discussion.
But they have no problem calling you a child. Go figure.

I hope some day they will come back to their senses. People are people, no matter if they are checkered. But I DO prefer a chocolate cookie and the name Negrita was perfect.

I wonder why all of a sudden race is more important. It is being considered an insult instead of a compliment! My mother's heritage was from Prussia, the family spoke German. Why would this be considered an insult?

@marguicha And if nobody mentioned the name of that cookie, noone would even care! Our school team is the Tawas Braves. In time, they will have to change this name. It's been the same for over 100 years!

@kobesbuddy The only one that started with that "politically correct" nonsense was the Swiss company. We use the word Negrita as a term of endearment.

In Latin America there is no racism, in all the countries here calling a person with a dark complexion "Negrito or Negrita" is very common and something very beautiful. My father called me "Precious Black" because my sister is blonde. It is ridiculous that corporations intervene in our culture.

For me it was a term of endearment. I wholly agree with you, Yuleima. And as you could almost be my granddaughter, I can call you Negrita preciosa as your father did.

If the company wants to make a change that's okay in my opinion. When I was little Jesus loves me the song said Red and yellow black and white. When my kids were babies it was then sung as Red Brown Yellow Black and White to be more inclusive. I thought it was weird to change a song and my aunt said it was to be more politically correct. Change is inevitable.

You won’t by a cookie because they changed the name becuaee it’s mildly offensive to a whole group of people. Now who sounds like a child not getting there way?
A lot of those changes are for a reason not because it might be hurtful to a group of people but it could be hurtful to the original peoples like Uncle Ben’s rice and that one pancake syrup which I can’t remember the name right now. It has to do with doing the right thing not preserving your child hood and what you called a cookie it’s a cookie get over. Most people call the half and half’s or dipped cookies.

@ShyBear88 Not all companies are US based, Nestlé is a Swiss company paying its taxes in Switzerland. Their choice may have been motivated by their brand image in the USA, though, the use of the name Negrita in a Spanish speaking country being not offensive for any generation. The choice of a name is done by a company, but the consumer can protest, it is what is doing Marguicha in this discussion.

@topffer what does being Spanish have to do with what a company choices to rename things. Nothing it’s up to a company that is probably mostly US based to change a name that is target for a general mixed population. Especially to a younger generation that knows very well anything that points and uses names/ slurs is not correct or mindful of others.

I have read two days ago on the local newspaper. I hope that the Rum Negrita will keep its name.
Two years ago a Swiss long-existing carnival band had its site shut down because their name was “Negro-Rhygass”.
I think it is time to stop this craziness.

@Nakitakona No. They are words and words depend on how they are used. Negrita, in the case of the cookie, alluded to the chocolate color. You cannot say that colors mean racism. And I was called Negrita in my childhood as a term of endearment. One of my friends still calls her husband "Flaco" as he was called that way by his chums when he played football. He was thin then. I call my youngest daughter "Flaquita" too. I never thought about my race until I went to the US as a child. I think that I have a lot of different bloods from my grandparents who came to Chile.

Why are these corporate industries are over conscious, I just don't understand. Maybe they don't want to get into trouble losing out money in compensations.
In our country we had this almost 40 years old popular fairness cream ointment named 'Fair & Lovely.' It is being manufactured by Hindustan Unilever Ltd ( a part of Unilever Ltd) and now they have renamed its popular product as 'Glow & Lovely', days once it set out to get rid of words that propagated racial stereotypes. They declared that it'll drop the word 'Fair' from its name and prohibit using discriminatory words.

In the Americas (North, Central and South) most of us are mestizos. Most of us descend from immigrants. Only in the US President Obama could be called black when his mother was Irish. He is a mulatto as many Americans. And his parents were never slaves.
