I wanted to say good morning to you but morning flew and it is almost 12:30. I just finished my first morning coffee after cleaning up a lot of pots that were soaaking in the kitchen. I soak with warm water teflon pots first so I don´t have to scrub them. I was reading on words and meanings for some time before actually turning off the lights. I didn´t know that an innocent post about the name of a cookie in my country would turn into a passionate one. There were good and bad parts of it. Most of the mylotters understood was I was saying. Thank you. But another thing happened. One of the lotters not only did not understand what I was saying but even attacked me in another post. I can say that although she is not the majority, she will benefit from these posts. I earned more money today than in the rest of the month and I will have more savings for my vacations. But after I got off from it all, it dawned on me that the other lotter had a point of view different because, among other things, her native language is English and mine is Spanish. In case you haven´t read my post, it was called "I will reach the minimum if I am not banned." And in the middle of the comments to the answers I received, I realised that the word "black" didn´t exist in Spanish. We only have one word: negro/negra. And I checked then on the etymology of the words. And I got it. Our language comes mainly from Latin. That´s why it is so easy for me to understand Portuguese, Italian and French. Negro comes from the Latin word "nigrum" and its first definition has to do with the color. Black, on the other hand comes from another source, probably Old English and maybe proto Indo-European via the Saxons. Hence, we don´t have a word thaat is a synonim to "black" but we use negro/a for all the uses they use it in English. That learned, I turned off the light and slept like an angel I was taught, when I was very small, to learn more if I wasn´t sure about what was said. I give thanks to my father who is not with me any longer. See you at my notifications, friends.

I was surprised when your innocent discussion fell out of control. Myk started a discussion that was related but it's gone now. The person that attacked you started a second discussion over this. It was deleted. Then a third late last night. I responded but I don't see the discussion today. I hope you are well and it's warm there today.

I didn´t know about the other discusions. I read the disusion started by Fiona but it quickly fell out of control. My post has not been deleted. I suppose the administration understood that I wanted to point out that there was no reason to attach race to a cookie I didn´t know that Mykl had started his own post. I´ll turn on the heater in this moment. The day has grown colder.

Negro basically refers to a race of people, who are of the Afro-American descent. It's no different than saying that I'm Caucasian, because my parents were descendants of Scotland and Germany. This is a compliment!

@marguicha And yes, it also refers to a color, as you've said. And it's not a derogatory remark, ever.

The English borrowed the word 'negro' from the Spanish to describe the colour of the skin of certain people, so in English it is only used to describe those with black skin. The name of the country, Nigeria, and the river Niger also derive from a similar word meaning 'black' as does the word spelled with two 'g's (which I can't write here).

@marguicha 'Black' has an interesting history. It is a Germanic word, though today most of the speakers of Germanic languages use a variation of 'schwarz' (German) as their common term for the colour black. In English, we have 'swarthy', meaning dark-complexioned. 'Black', however, comes from an Indo-European word which meant 'burning' or 'shining', which came to refer to the result of burning rather than to the shining quality of flame or fire! It actually seems to be related to your word for 'white' - 'blanco/a'! So it seems that you do have the word 'black' in Spanish, but it means the exact opposite! 'Schwartz', on the other hand, came to mean 'black' from a word which always meant 'dark' or 'dirty'. 'Negro' comes, as you say, from the Latin 'niger, nigr-'' and the etymology is uncertain but it may have come from an Indo-European word which also gave us the English word 'night' (and meant the same).

@owlwings I love to read about the etymology of words In the Spanish we talk in Latin America there is a great difference in many words depending on where you live. In my country, Chile, we have many words of Quechua origin (the Incans) or Aymará. But in Mexico there are lots of words that come from the Nahuatl talked by the Mayas. Even in other languages the Nahuatl has had influence, specially in naming fruit that were originally from the zone. Chocolate comes from the Nahuatl chocolatl. And avocado comes from the Nahuatl aguacatl. But in Chile we call the avocados (aguacates in Mexico) paltas.

I haven't read the post you mentioned, but thanks for sharing this info with us! I think it's probably the lack of awareness about other people's language/culture that often causes such misunderstandings.

Now I know where the word came from. I knew you were not meaning it in a bad way when you posted. I also knew it meant dark or black at one time before it became a bad word at least here.

@wolfgirl569 That, of course, is derogatory. But still, it is not a Spanish word so it is not used here. I only hear it once in a while on TV.

I think you went to a lot of trouble for people who don't take the time to do your research. Investigating before attacking was what that person should have done, don't pay attention to uninformed people. I saw the post and also responded to her and I explained many things to her to that user. It's all about tolerance.
