Along with other Filipinos, I am still elated after the Philippines won its first gold medal in the Olympics, in weightlifting at that.
You see, Filipinos love sports. However, unless it is basketball, athletes do not get that much love, support, and of course, funding. So, when Hidylyn Diaz won the gold medal for the women's 55-kilogram weightlifting, it is an eye-opener to Filipinos.
Hidylyn Diaz ended a 97-year Olympic gold drought for the Philippines, and I think the timing of this momentous event could not be more perfect. While our government is suffering from myopic vision, making decisions that cause more harm than benefit to its people, this gold medal is our much-needed boost and escape (at least for a short while) from everything that is happening to our country.

Almost a century to get one, and finally she brings one, a proud moment to all Filipinos.

It's an honor for the Philippines but the country isn't happy about her for she's blacklisted aa one of the ousters of the President.
