Nostalgia

I have just been on a big nostalgia trip with Tom Paxton. I set up my CD player today and rediscovered a lot of music I'd forgotten I had. All sorts of things - Mozart, some African Kora muisic I had forgotten I had and finally a Tom Paxton album. I don't remember being a 'Tom Paxton fan' as such but so many of his tunes are just so singable and everyone used to play them a lot - especially the ones like 'Wild Flying Dove' and 'The Last Thing on my Mind'. Tom Paxton was a huge part of my heritage, I realize now, but of course there were others before and since like Joan Baez and Bert Lloyd and Martin Carthy. What singers were your 'back story' and what songs did you sing in your young years - I mean sing by yourself maybe with a guitar or whatever? I'll leave you with one which is one which I love but is not one he's best remembered for:

I do not know this Tom Paxton, but Joan Baez was among the singers I remember, Bob Dylan too and many Italian singers, because back in time we used to listen to the songs distributed in our countries. The "globalization" came later.

I only remember one song but it's not one I can honestly say I really liked nor did I know the name of the singer at the time .... Lyndon Johnson Told The Nation

"Lyndon Johnson told the nation, 'Have no fear of escalation. We are trying everyone to please ...'" Great lyrics and a good tune (Paxton's tunes are usually outstanding), but not one of my favourites. It's on the CD, though, so it was one I listened to. The protest songs often date rather badly and lose their freshness.

Makes sense. But I still like that one song by Barry McGuire cuz it would seem there's always some stupid war going on somewhere. Some of the lyrics are a little outdated but the gist of it still hits home.

The only one of those I've hear of (not counting Mozart) is Joan Baez. I do have eclectic taste in music. My husband tells me that people tend to grow up enjoying the music their parents listened to. Well, I'm not sure how accurate that is anyway but my parents didn't really listen to music. During the 80s and early 90s, I would be the one hovering over the record button on my tape player, taping my favourite songs from the radio. I don't think I've listened or enjoyed any 'chart' music since Top of the Pops left us! My first musical love, I think, was Bryan Adams. The first tape I owned was his 'Waking Up the Neighbours' album that my sister gave me. I honestly don't remember the first music I bought for myself. Apart from that, I'll sing along to Bob Marley, various 80s songs/bands, and some rock/metal - Scorpion, Iron Maiden, etc. I also enjoy singing and dancing to Showaddywaddy and the Jive Aces. I could go on, but I'd be here all day!

I cannot say that I am familiar with Tom Paxton's music. While I have fairly eclectic tastes in music, I think it reasonable to say that my personal musical landscape skews more toward Tom Petty than Tom Paxton.

I listened to the radio way too much in the 70s so I could give you a list as long as my arm. They still tend to be my favorites ;)

John Denver for me and Simon and Garfunkel. National Public Radio has educated me on classical music.

Denver was a little too smooth for my liking (perhaps our kind rather eschewed anyone who was too 'commercial'!) but Annie's Song and Take Me Home Country Roads were ones I remember.

I don't think I ever sang songs just by myself. No, that's not true. I just remembered once singing Flow gently sweet Afton while on the swings in the backyard as a child.

That sounds quite good. At times, it is good to be in the nostalgic lane! I used to listen to Backstreet boys, Bryan Adams and of course some good songs from Bollywood. Bollywood does produces good songs now also but I am not fond of all the remixes.

My brother-in-law introduced us to Tom Paxton and I love many of his songs. Ramblin' Boy is a great favourite of mine. I'm sure you would have had great enjoyment rediscovering your old CDs.
