Tokyo Olympics 2020: While India has won 7 medals in all, and a big news- highest medal tally in a single games so far, the icing on the cake is this one Medal won by Neeraj Chopra. Let's have a look: Javelin Throw Tokyo Olympics 2020 winner : Neeraj Chopra 1st medal for Independent India in any Track and Field event(Athletics): There were two medals by Norman Pritchard for India in 1900, but well that was British India and by name I presume that Norman was probably British or Anglo-Indian. P.T.Usha - 400 M (was it Hurdles) came 4th in Los Angeles Olympics 1984 (missed by a very narrow margin) and Milkha Singh too missed on a medal in Rome 1960. Second : With a mammoth throw of 87.58 meter, this is only the 2nd ever individual Gold medal after Abhinav Bindra’s GOLD in shooting in 2008 Beijing. A day truly memorable for India. A feat that will always be remembered for may be sparking something great for overall Indian athletics. News Source:

@Vikingswest1 Something that was due since long time. We are hoping for greater success for India in sports in the coming times. 7 medals for India at Tokyo 2020, and I am hopeful the tally can cross 10 in the next ones : Paris 2024.

This Olympics would definitely bring a lot of changes in our nation's sports and mindset about it. I read it today in news on social media that they might drop Weightlifting from next Olympics. That doesn't sound good. Chanu hopes for gold might be shattered. They should include more sports and drop the ones on list.

@arunima25 Some changes can be ridiculous at times. Are they targeting weightlifting because Asia dominates in them? May be? Definitely not good for India.

@JudyEv Yes a big big feat for the whole country. Yes Australia has been a good medal winner in the Olympics over the years. In Men's Hockey it won silver and I think Australia has been winning medals in Athletics, Swimming and other sports as well as over the years.

@JudyEv Some areas in India too have a good climate. Some areas in Australia too heat up a lot in the summers. We might find excuses but the fact was that culturally, if we forget may be the Ancient India, we have been disinclined to send our boys and girls into sports. Many wanted the kids to get into Government jobs which kind of provide economic safety, or into fields like Medical, Engineering or just get into some kind of paying jobs. More conservative ones even discouraged girls from higher studies. Sports have lagged in such a setup. But with awareness, more support from Corporates, certain individuals, state and central Governments, we now have a developing sports culture and infrastructure and hopefully more medals across Olympics, Asian games, Commonwealth and various world championships. It is no more only about Cricket.

I was expecting a discussion from you quite early on this....you delayed a bit...anyways it was a wonderful moment. Norman was an Indian born British, born in Calcutta. Yes Neeraj's Gold has really come as a shocker/ surprise.....there was nothing much about him at the start of the Olympics. Not to forget ,this was his first Olympics and he bagged a Gold.... Kudos to him....I am really proud and happy for him

@S4mmyboy Well I had read about Neeraj Chopra a few years back. Though not exactly a medal hope, I had read that he was training abroad. But yes, his is a great achievement and would be remembered a lot. I was delayed but well posted this discussion well past 12 Midnight! Thanks for sharing your views !
