So kinda...we INDIANS remove our shoes, when we return from outside.
We also remove our footwear when we visit others homes near the door outside door or in place for them...wear them again when we move into their yard.
I do not recall ever wearing outside footwear INSIDE the house.
Do you all do the same? Curious...

@Noor0000001 most of the time our parents give us good advice and we should follow them.

We wear shoes to our bedroom and take them off while inside the house. (At the other house, we took shoes off at the door and left them there when we came inside. This house is too small to do that.)

@vandana7 And you hope their feet don't stink?
At the other house, we had a friend who lived with us for a year. He slept on our sofa in the living room. We didn't notice his feet smelled until after he moved out. Then we had to shampoo the carpets to get the odor of his feet out.

It is a habit from childhood and culture . . . we never wore shoes in the house (unless they were house slippers) and we always took our shoes off when going to other people's houses. All except at other "American" households . . . they always asked me why I was taking my shoes off and that I can just leave them on. Yah, ok if that's ok with them, but to me it feels WEIRD to wear outside shoes indoors.

It depends on the house you go to. If the friends take their shoes off, you take your shoes off. If they wear their shoes inside, so do you.

@much2say - traditionally, we remove outside footwear, then wear home footwear, which are flip flops, walk to the restroom wash our feet, with those flip flops, dry our feet on the foot mat...while moving out, and then we are good to be home for the day. I have a pair that I can use outside that can double as flip flops too. But still, I change. But when we wash the feet, the water does go near the commode...and it does get wet....I believe you all have dry toilets. In normal Indian households, I have yet to see dry toilets. Yes, in posh hotels, it is dry. But they design their toilets like that.

That is us Indians. I have to look at their movies, whether they remove their shoes while visiting. But it seems unlikely. Kinda, if you are wearing heels, and you are attending a party or get together, why would you remove them? If so, do people with sneakers continue to wear them, or do they wear their formal boots? Really curious. LOL

@vandana7 It depends on where you're at and who you're with whether you wear your outside shoes inside. If you're at a party, you continue wearing your outside shoes inside. If you're at a friend's house, you take your shoes off... unless it's a party.
If friends come to your house, they take their shoes off.

It very much depends on the situation. If you are going to someones house for a formal occasion then it would be acceptable to leave your shoes on if it is casual occasion then take them off & leave in the hallway or porch. When staying as guests then wear inside sliders or slippers. At home l am always bare footed but would feel uncomfortable elsewhere & prefer something on my feet.

@vandana7 It depends on which room you are in & the time of year. In tiled floors in the winter no but carpeted areas it is ok. Some houses have under floor heating.

@wolfgirl569 We wear flip flops at home. Kinda...remove outside shoes, get into flip flops, go to washroom, wash feet and then on foot mat ..... but yes, I am fine with being bare footed at home.

@vandana7 Most of the people I visit I either am not staying long or we might be in and out some. Easier to leave them on. I do take them off at one of my aunts house if I visit as she has white carpeting. I would never want a light colored carpet. It is too much work. At home I am usually barefoot in and out when it is warm enough.

I would only take my shoes off when I come inside a home if the shoes were wet or dirty since I fear walking barefoot and stepping on a tack or a sharp object inside the home.

But shoes are always dirty, right? Kinda you never know what was on the street, from where another car traveled. They may have traveled in country side. We do wear slippers, but normally on temporary visits, we are barefoot. Normally we don't expect sharp objects on floor, and I don't know what is tack. :(

No. We wear our shoes into the house. Once inside I change into flip flops; and my husband puts on his slipper socks.

I typically do so, mainly because I don't like shoes, but I can't get my husband to do it--

Me too. But we do use slippers inside. So kinda remove outside footwear, wear home wear, go to the bathroom, wash them feet, and then dry them on foot mat, and then roam around freely. Somehow, it is so basic, that I never thought Americans did not do it. Yes, sometimes, when we sit we leave the slippers, and move around without anything. That is ok too. But the reason this doubt came was also the way your bathrooms are designed. It is impossible for bathrooms not to get wet near commodes when we wash our feet.

@xander6464 Here, they deliver outside the door. Normally, they are in such a rush. But for bill payment, they come inside.
India is a royal country. We may not be rich like you all. But we still enjoy many luxuries you all don't. LOL

I find it strange that people wear expensive jewelry and make up while sleeping in Indian serials... kinda ..really? We wear housecoats or nighties. Those sarees and jewelry whether expensive or duplicate are for going out. I have yet to meet a person who is so made up daily.
