Pastor Confused Me:

Well, 'a quote FROM Pastor' confused me. Reading a Christian magazine, I read the editor's introduction. And in it, he says, "Pastor says that The Bible teaches that man is a three-part being: We are a spirit; we have a soul; we live in a body. When we were born again, our spirit was made new.... Our soul (mind, will and emotions) was not...."
Where does 'The Bible tell us all this'? When I learned about the soul, spirit & body from The Bible, it was 'from Genesis'---God formed Man's body (from the ground), breathed HIS Spirit into it (which is where the word 'spirit' comes from ... "breathed"), and the combination was 'the living soul.'
What happened? When did the soul become 'some separate thing that a human has'?

I cannot tell you for sure but from what I understand and have believed all along when we die our souls are separate they leave out bodies and continue living in the afterlife, Our bodies remain empty and get disposed of, Perhaps this can also help,
