Sexuality, if you mean orientation, is not something a person chooses. It's biological, and every day more and more studies come out to support that.
I've never understood why people think it's a choice. Who would choose to live a life of fear? Who would choose a life full of prejudice and hatred? Who would choose a life where they have to fear being beaten or even killed? When you look at all the suffering and pain that comes with being gay, why would anyone choose that?

I'm an American lesbian. I know full well what it means to be gay in America today. Acceptance all depends on where you are. Go out to the Bible Belt where openly gay people are shunned. Where they're spoken out against every Sunday at church and called inhuman. Where gay teens get beaten up every day if it comes out they're gay. Or take a look at the government who wants to make it illegal for gay people to get married. Or the fact that in 47 states, it's legal to fire someone for being gay, or deny them medical coverage. Did you know that there are American hospitals that will refuse blood transfusions or invasive surgery to gay men because 'they might have AIDs?
Just because something's more accepted than it used to be, that doesn't mean it's actually accepted.
