Stranded

Yesterday my mom visited her friends who live on a small island. She enjoyed her time with her friends, but when she wanted to leave there was no ferry. She thought it was delayed, but it was worse. She found out that the ferry broke down in the middle of the water. The passengers weren't in danger, but they were stuck on the ferry, and the ferry was not able to pick up my mom and the other passengers who were waiting at the habour.
My mom was very worried. She knew that there was another ferry, but that ferry runs between different harbours, and my mom parked her car in the town where she was supposed to arrive. There were no buses that late at night, and a taxi would have been extremely expensive.
Fortunately her friends are very nice and they let her borrow their car. My mom got a ticket for the other ferry, and when she arrived she drove to the town where she had left her own car. Her friends will have to take the ferry in order to get their car back, so it was really nice of them to lend her their car.
In the past I lived on a small island, and things like this happen sometimes. We had a bridge, but sometimes it was closed because of accidents or the weather. When it happened we couldn't leave the island or we couldn't get home. That is one of the things I don't miss about that place, and I don't plan on living on a small island again.

She would have done that if she didn't have pets at home. If she is gone for a short time my uncle feeds her dog etc, but if she wants to spend the night somewhere else she has to arrange it in advance.

@Porcospino I see. Pets must be considered, of course. I have two cats. I'm lucky. When I go away, my neighbours from downstairs care for them.

I grew up on an island. The only downside to it, was hurricane season. If they closed the bridges, you couldn't get to the mainland. It's also why my husband will never live on beachside. He doesn't want to be trapped, if they close the bridges.

That sounds like us, but in our case I am the one who don't like it. My husband and his parents lived on an island for many years, and he is used to it. I felt trapped when they closed the bridges. My husband said: "Don't worry, they will open the bridges when it is safe" but I never got used to that part.

I would panic too. I am glad her friends let her borrow their car. The only other option was a taxi and it would have been really expensive.

Me too. I know she is happy that she doesn't live on a small island like her friends.

Yes, it was so unexpected. She thought she would be able to return home without problems. I am glad her friends helped her.

I lived on a small island in the past, but I wouldn't do it again. The island was beautiful, but I grew up in a city and it was a very different experience to live on a small island.

I can imagine how worried she must have been. So nice of her friends to let her use their car.

Yes, it was really nice of them. She didn't expect problems when she wanted to return to her home, and she was very worried, but fortunately she managed to return with the help of her friends.
