It is just wheat flour deep fried and no filling? We do the same in Italy, it's called gnocco fritto.

Mandazi are made with coconut milk and cinnamon and baking powder rather than yeast, but the principle is the same.

@owlwings Thank you very much Owl, so those are a sweet version. We eat the gnocco fritto with the Italian cured meats (prosciutto, salame, coppa and so on).

Seen of main ingredients and how to fried, look like a donut recipe. And because it's similar for me, I often give the topping of chocolate granules or powdered sugar which is simpler. Well, but that is Mandazi. Still looks yummy...

I'm very interested in all the responses from people in the Philippines, Indonesia and Italy about the slightly different varieties of the same thing which amounts to small deep-fried pieces of bread dough. They all sound very tempting and I'd love to try them. In England we don't deep fry many things at home. We tend to leave that to restaurants and take-aways who have the ability and the equipment to have large pans of hot fat or oil. The nearest equivalent to mandazi that we have here would be doughnuts which are tennis ball sized lumps of sweet yeast dough deep fried until done and then coated with sugar and then filled (with a syringe) with jam or chocolate. Very delicious! I would like to try mandazi - they sound rather like mini doughnuts, only easier to make.
