Masks, Face Shields and Miscommunication at the Supermarket

Me: Nasaan yung pang baking? (Where's the baking stuff?) Grocery Staff 1: Aisle 21. When I get to Aisle 21, the sign says "Baby." I turn around and tweak my question. Me: Nasaan yung hotcake? (instant pancake mix) (Where's the hotcake?) Grocery Staff 2: Aisle 7. When I get to Aisle 7, I see packages of 'Cakes', as in factory/mass-baked cupcakes, muffins, rolls, bars in individual packs. I turn around and tweak my question again. Me: Nasaan yung arina? (flour) (Where's the flour?) Grocery Staff 3: Aisle 16. May all-purpose flour doon. (Aisle 16. There's all-purpose flour there.) So 1st staff heard Baby, instead of Baking. 2nd staff heard Cake, instead of Hotcake. (We say Hotcake and Pancake here). Oh, well, just part of life under Covid19. Any similar experiences?

We call it hotcake. I went to this sari sari store and ask if they have quail egg. Meron po ba kayo itlog pugo? Tindera: meron. Me: magkano? (How much?) Tindera: 7 pesos Me:. (counted my loose coins but I had question on my head, why it is too expensive? Then I saw the tindera putting chicken eggs in the plastic. So, she misunderstood me. Maybe she only heard egg.

@jobelbojel Yum! So were you able to buy them from her or did you have to buy it elsewhere?

Correct, 7 pesos is also the usual average price for chicken eggs here, although there is a store here that sell them in different sizes and prices (small, medium, large and extra large). Why were you buying quail eggs? How many did you need?

Yes, I did go around, that's what I always do, go through all the aisles. Then before lining up at the cashier, check one last time if I forgot anything. I guess I didn't see it because it's been awhile several months since I've been in this supermarket and the layout is different.

@rakski I still go there once in a while because they carry brands and items that the supermarket here doesn't.

One effect of wearing face masks and face shields is that your voice might change that others may hear differently from what you really meant. My wife would usually experience that when they could not understand each other so my wife would just make her voice a bit louder.

@merrybelle2021 I think that will stay for as long as the threat of infection is still present. Or it may indeed stay permanently already as they seem to be a solution to stop the spread of a disease of any kind.

I let my husband speak when I want to know where the item is. I think wearing mask inside a store makes it difficult to communicate.

@m_audrey6788 So you only speak in English at home? Do you take lessons?

No similar experience. I'm quite familiar with the supermarket where I do my groceries so I seldom need to ask questiosn from the staff.

@merrybelle2021 same. I have to visit a bigger supermarket because it has more choices than the one near me.

I used to go to this supermarket which is 1 ride away before a big one was built here in our neighborhood. I still go to this other supermarket once in a while because they have items and brands not found here.

That's the problem when you're wearing mask. sometimes i remove them a bit so i can speak clearly. I had experience one time in jollibee. I ordered one piece of burger stake (b1) but the service crew misheard me and gave me b2 instead.

And because it is pandemic time, we take things in stride. Glad you were cool about it.

It was inevitable. Same when you're divided by a plastic sheet or acrylic barrier, there will be always mishears if both parties wear the masks and shields.

I can't remember same incident like what you've experienced but we have a funny one because of faceshield and facemask. We are the entrance of a grocery store and the staff is making a hand sign (as if she is asking me to wear my faceshield) and I was wondering because I can clearly see that my faceshield is covering my face. I just ignore the staff and went on to the QR Code. Then, the same staff approached me and said " mam , don't you have a facemask? Gezz, okay fine I have my faceshield but missing my facemasks

Hahaha! Here, Savemore is very strict about the face shield. I had to buy a face shield 2x even though we have plenty at home. What I annoys me is I can't smell something like food or soap, etc. that I might want to buy because I avoid taking off the mask and shield while I'm out.

It is difficult to ask question here, most of them don't understand English so I show picture instead.

Sometimes it's pretty hard to hear through the mask. You may need to speak a little louder than you normally do.
