More about schools and homework

There have been a couple of discussions lately on homework. I was reasonably good at school, if I do say so myself, and was conscientious. I almost always completed my homework but sometimes I’d be able to get it done at school at the end of a lesson. The hour’s ride home on the school bus was too bumpy to do much in the way of writing but I’d learn my French verbs or whatever so there was less to do when I got home.
I always wanted to ride my pony when I got home and I also had a number of chores to do on the farm. I was also expected to do well at school so over time I guess I learnt to manage my time carefully.
In our final few years, we were encouraged to have a study timetable. We were given lots of advice about dividing up our time between our subjects - maybe spending an hour on one then having a break of ten minutes on a different subject then changing to something else.
Drawing up a timetable quite intrigued me but I think I spent quite a bit of good study time devising new timetables. Basically I enjoyed school although I was never good at any of the sports we had to do.
The photo is of my brother and sister about to be taken to school. The little tacker is me.

Neat pic..although I don't think my mother ever did, my uncle sometimes rode a horse to school when he was a kid. Country kids used to do that sometimes. I was famous for doing my HW before class started, or in home room. Perish the thought, I would actually do it at home.

@JudyEv He said he didn't really like riding the horse too much because he couldn't monitor all the kids and they would bug the horse or want to pet it all the time etc. Say he needed to clean up horse poop or whatever. You know kids.

@snowy22315 Some of the horses had to put up with a fair bit from the kids.

This poem sums up what was school to me
Destiny takes us we know not where
But we carry our memories there
School times, classmates loads of fun
Exams done accolades won.
Driving teachers round the bend
Teasing, jeering it had no end
“Stand on the bench” they’d scream away
But from them we would run away
Lunch time spent in running around
In the baking sun till the ball was found
The recess over, back to the class
Striving for those marks to pass
Some were always upto pranks
Competing for those tempting ranks
Pushing prodding to come out first
If one failed the tears would burst
Classmates are a wonderful gift
Try your best stop the drift
Teachers, masters ever so kind
Tough it was to leave them behind
So many years of endless joy
Fun and frolic boy oh boy!
Dramas, rehearsals, singing galore
I wish those years were here once more

My brother and sister were twins and I was born on their 8th birthday. You can't see the difference so well in the photo.

Cute picture. School was OK until I got into high school. The school I went to was in the top 10 in the nation -- difficult and demanding...plus I was put in several honors classes. High school was quite overwhelming.

@LindaOHio There are a few decisions I wouldn't mind having the chance to change but too late now.

@JudyEv Thanks. I would like to have a chance to do it over again. Maybe I would make some different decisions; and it wouldn't be so bad.

My one saving grace was that I could ride a horse. Not too many at school had that opportunity.

What an adorable picture.
I had an hour's bus ride to and from school also.
Coming home I never did much unless I had some reading to do.
Taking the bus into town for school in the mornings I would often study for a test if I had any or finish up any reading that I may not have finished then night before.

It's nice to have old photos to bring back these memories.
