Allergies - my story

I am allergic to nickel, and some years ago I had a really bad allergic reaction. I was using a hair clip that contained nickel and I wasn't aware of it. I lost some of my hair, and I had to cut the rest of my hair in order to repair the damage. I had bald spots for a long time, but my hair has grown back now. That hair clip didn't just affect my hair, it also made me allergic to food that contains a lot of nickel. In most cases that doesn't happen. Most people with this type of allergy only get an allergic reaction if they wear things that contain nickel or if they come into contact with nickel in other ways. They don't get an allergic reaction if they eat food that contains a lot of nickel. At first my doctor didn't know what it was, and he didn't believe that food with nickel was able to cause red spot all over my body. I asked him directly and he said: "No, that is not possible" I still thought that there could be a connection, so I decided conduct my own experiment. I stopped eating food that contains a lot of nickel (nuts, chocolate, some vegetables etc) and two weeks later 95% of my rash had disappeared. As soon as I started eating those things again my rash returned. I asked another doctor and he immediately knew what I was talking about. It is a rare thing, but it happens to some people. He told me told me to stick to food with low nickel content for a couple of months. "That usually solves the problem" he said. I did what he said, but nothing changed. The rash always came back. It is impossible to avoid nickel completely, and even the small amounts of nickel I got from other kinds of food were enough to cause itchy, red spots all over my body. My doctor gave me different ointments, but they only helped for a while. I accepted that it was never going to disappear for good, but this year the rash suddenly disappeared. It looks like I finally got rid of the food allergy. I gradually started eating more of the food that I have been avoiding for so long, and I didn't get a rash. The second doctor said two months - it actually took 6 years...but at least I am finally able to eat chocolate again

Good that you found out you are allergic to nickel. It is not always possible to make such a discovery and people start wondering where their allergies came from. How is one to know which food contains nickel?

@allknowing Chocolate and most nuts have a lot of nickel. Sunflower seeds, beans and soy flour also contain quite a lot of nickel, but not as much as chocolate.

I knew I had contact allergy. I discovered that many years ago because of some earrings I was wearing, but my reaction to food with high nickel content came as a surprise to me. The first doctor I talked to didn't know about it, but I found some information online and the second doctor confirmed it.

Thanks I really hope it doesn't come back. Yes, there are many things I can't use. I got rid of most of my jewelry and all of my hair clips, but I also have to be careful with other things.

I know several people allergic to nickel, less common an allergy to food containing nickel. I am allergic to peanuts, severely allergic to peanuts, I almost feel sick simply writing the word.

I also know other people who are allergic to nickel. None of them are allergic to food with nickel. I am especially sensitive to nickel. The first doctor I talked to didn't believe that nickel in food was able to cause an allergic reaction in some people, but the second doctor was aware of it. I remember you mentioned your peanut allergy before. I used to get itschy, red spots when I ate peanuts (high in nickel) but a severe type of peanut allergy like yours is much worse than the things I experienced.

@Porcospino There are some foods that make me itchy, I still have to really spot what they are. Peanuts send me to the ER immediately.

Congratulations on beating the allergy! I carry epi-pens with me everywhere I go because of allergies. They're so much fun!

Thanks. I am so happy that I don't have to avoid those types of food anymore. Which allergies do you have? My entire family has allergies. My mom and my brother don't have too many problems with their allergies, but my dad's allergy was very severe (bee allergy)

@Porcospino *sigh* I'm allergic, according to the dermatologist, to dust, pet dander, bees in general and wasps specifically, different types of pollen, several medications, shellfish and several common plants here in the US. I've gotten to spend days in the hospital too swelled up to see or talk. It wasn't fun. The epi-pens will keep me functioning long enough to reach the hospital, usually. Once, I passed out in our yard and my daughter, Pretty, had to get me into our car and take me to the ER. (Pretty doesn't know how to drive. She's 33, but doesn't have a license... )

@Porcospino I am glad that you rash went away and that you can eat the foods again that you stopped eating because the rash came back when you ate them and went away when you stopped eating them. That is good that it disappeared.

Thanks. I am really happy about that. I thought that it was never going to disappear because it kept coming back even with the food restrictions, but it seems to have disappeared now

I find that interesting. I knew about contact allergies with nickel, but never thought of it in our food. I know as we get older our bodies change.I hope your body is strengthening itself now.

Most people only have contact allergies. I am especially sensitive to nickel, and I used to get a rash each time I ate food with hign or moderate content of nickel. I still have contact allergy, but that is easier to manage than the food allergy.

In the past I didn't know about the nickel content in food either, but I found a website that showed the nickel content in each type of food. Chocolate and nuts contain a lot of nickel, but things like cucumber is almost nickel free

Luckily, I am not allergic to any specific metal or food items. But when you are allergic to something and you know about it, it is always better as you can take utmost precaution.

Wow, I wouldn’t live without my chocolates. My husband is allergic to crab meat but he always forgets about this whenever he sees fat crabs in front and of him.
