Found innocent for reasons of insanity he is sent to a mental hospital. In the mental institution, the other 14 personalities are examined. The doctors there use him to extend their careers, by writing a book that he is supposed to get half of the proceeds from. He was transferred to several state hospitals but never given the counseling he needed and was being prescribed medication for schizophrenia and not DID. Doctors didn't believe he had DID. The story goes on and on and has many strange turns but it eventually ends with Milligan dying of cancer at a nursing home in Columbus, Ohio, on December 12, 2014. He was 59.
I have always been fascinated by this syndrome and have interviewed a couple of people who were diagnosed with it. Many people do not believe in multiple personalities. The question I pose to these people is this: How can a person lose time, have no memory of what has transpired during this time, and not have multiples? Also, how can a person say to have DID change from one to another while you are sitting there in front of them? How can they keep track of the personalities, what they have said, the characteristics, manner of speech, abnormalities, etc. if they aren't realistic multiples? I don't get it.

It sounds really complicated. What does DID actually stand for?
