We started with coconut oil and then switched over to pea nut oil We are now settled for sun flower oil and are quite satisfied. Sunflower oil has no smell and is cholesterol free It is very light as well. Lots of recommendations are ofcourse there for olive oil but it is imported and olives are not grown here. There is talk of rice bran as well. What did you start with and what are you using now

I grew up with Wesson Vegetable oil. I get canola oil & cooking olive oil. I'm glad you posted, for I never knew sunflower oil, no cholesterol. I'm going to keep an eye for it. Hoping not expensive. Thanks!!

Coconut oil has a relatively low smoke point and is unsuitable for frying. It's not true to say that sunflower oil has "no cholesterol", though it is one of the lowest in saturated fat and therefore encourages 'good cholesterol' You should make sure that, for frying, you are using refined sunflower oil with a smoke point of about 450 deg F. The unrefined oil has a lower smoke point. The following link may be of interest, though many of the oils may not be available in India, or prohibitively expensive!

@allknowing Their website only says that they 'use dual seed technology', which is a roundabout way of saying that it's a blend of two oils** - from the name, I suspect that they are safflower and canola (oil-seed rape), both of which are good and healthy oils with good levels of Omega-3 and -6 and suitable for frying. ** FoodnetIndia says that Saffola Gold is a blend of 20% Safflower and 80% Rice Bran oils. It doesn't seem to rate it particularly highly and says that it's unsafe for high-temperature cooking, which is likely to oxidise the lineolic acid (Omega-6) into 'toxic' compounds.

@owlwings I doubt any consumer will do that kind of research but go by what is recommended by their doctors and hopefully doctors would have done that research Saffola Gold is pretty new and they have been screaming from the roof top that it is good for one's heart. They have another brand which is just known as Saffola which we used to use until this came along

I read olive oil shouldn't be used for cooking as they're not healthy when they' heat up. WE use vegetable oil.

@allknowing It's been known for a long time that one shouldn't use extra virgin olive oil for cooking because of its low smoke point. The secondary oil extracts from olives, after the first pressing, have higher smoke points and can be used for sauteing and low-temperature frying, but even these grades are normally blended with other oils these days. Historically, people would have used lard and butter/ghee to fry foods. Olive oil would be used at the end of cooking or on cold food, such as a salad or dip.

The oil is used for cooking and not to apply on bread. I have mentioned that in the post.

I use palm oil. Malaysia produces palm oil so it's a bit cheaper here. At least cheaper than olive oil or sunflower oil.
