A Great British Delicacy?

beans on toast

Is it a particularly British thing, having beans on toast? I love this dish, you can have it anytime, is easy to prepare, cheap, and best of all, has little washing up. While it is straight forward to make, I believe that what makes a great beans on toast is to slather on the butter and deposit the beans on top. As a special treat I sometimes crown it all with a single, tinned, tomato. The final touch is plenty of pepper, then serve. Simple treats are the best! From this YouTube video, I gather it is a bit of a novelty in the US, at least. Maybe I should put up a video on how to make the ideal beans on toast.

I have not tried baked beans on toast. I will as I still have Heinz baked beans in the pantry. Thanks for the idea.

I would never have guessed that this wasn't well-known in America. They are always talking about beans but I guess it's some other sort of beans. When we get together with our friends and have breakfast together, one guy always brings tinned baked beans. Vince doesn't like them - had them too often as a kid I think - but the rest of us have them on toast.

@Ronrybs In photos they mostly seem to be dark. In all the old cowboy movies and books they just about lived on baked beans - or so it seemed.

From the little I have gathered in the US beans are added to some meals and at BBQs

Yes, it's particularly a British thing just like a stir fry onion dish is a Polish thing. I like the 'slather the butter' on the toast. Sounds tasty.

@Ronrybs Yup. Will buy Heinz Beanz and Queensland Butter on grocery day. Must the beans be heated before pouring on the toast?

Interesting, wonder if it is because of a difference in the production of the beans or the bread?

@RebeccasFarm It has dawned on me that on my visits to the US I never tried beans, but did have toast and that seemed alright

I've never heard of or tried that combination but I do like both. Maybe I'll give it a try next time I have beans

I studied abroad in England for a year but couldn't bring myself to try beans on toast. Also skipped Vegemite/Marmite.
