My job search is over

Mylotters, I'm happy to land a job as of this morning. I've received a call from my local school district that I've been hired as a substitute food service worker for the local high school and one elementary school that's closest to me to walk to, though I originally applied for a regular fixture two weeks ago. I had the interview last week at the high school. This job is perfect for me because I wanted a local job with a flexible schedule to fit my needs. I can walk to work--the high school is 10 minutes away, the elementary is 15 minutes away--except for bad weather/winter days I would need to call the bus. That was the chef's main concern on giving me the job, so he gave me the two closest schools (I wanted the high school). His idea was to start me out as a substitute and see how it works out. If it does, it become a permanent position to give me experience in the food service industry and earn me some money on the side, so I can move next summer. It's only less than part-time (2.5 hours/day), which would be more later on. And the pay is 11.68/hr for days I work for the schools by prepping or serving food for my shift at 10:30 Am-1 PM. It's not official yet since I have to wait to hear from HR and do a background check next week. I have final job interviews today, tomorrow, Friday, and next Thursday and Friday to finish it out. When it's official, I'll let you know. I also plan to land a seasonal job downtown sometime in October, so I can work weekends/nights/holidays, and afternoon, which is tricky to do with my bus schedule.

@KristenH what do you mean downtown in two weeks? Check for jobs there instead if the others don't pan out?

Thanks Marsha. I have one more seasonal interview left--Macy's on Friday--that I scheduled today. It was my 2nd to last application I sent out last night. If not, I'll downtown in two weeks.

@MarshaMusselman I did check the jobs there last month. Not many were hiring, since most were family or one-person owned. This is the ice cream parlor's slow season due to cooler weather. The other stores said they weren't hiring for seasonal until November. So I plan to go to one store next weekend after volunteering and the other two places I contacted in mid-October after church to see if I can find work there.

@sallypup Thanks. I had my last seasonal job interview at the mall--due to my availability, it won't work out. So I stick to downtown and try my luck there this month.

I know. But it's a starting point to work a day or two a week when needed. That's why I'm looking for a seasonal job downtown or elsewhere that might fit my schedule to get more money.

@KristenH You are a busy one. I hope it all works out and you get that job and it will work out for you and you can continue to work there and not have to continue to look for a job.

Yes I was. Two long months of job hunting and interviewing. So exhausting indeed. I'll be lucky to work other shifts, other schools, to earn more money.

@KristenH Job hunting is not much fun. I put that up there with looking for a place to live. I do not like either. I hope it all works out for you.

I hope you're right. I've been praying for it for two weeks or so. He's been letting the others pass or give me no response at all. I hope he can do the same for landing a seasonal job that might fit my schedule.

Yes it is. I remember during last week's interview, he said that one of the elementary schools is understaffed with 1-2 food service workers. I'm not sure the one I'm assigned to is one of them. But I don't mind doing prep for breakfast either.

@HazySue. I hope so. This will give me experience and a taste on what it would be like, if I pursue other food service venues in the future.
