M.K. Gandhi, popularly known , loved and honoured by the people of India with the name Mahatma Gandhi. "Mahatma" translated into English is "the great soul". He was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar in Gujarat state of India. How he led the people of India to freedom from the British colonial rule is a great inspiring story. The path of truth and non-violence that Gandhi walked and fired the people of India to follow inspired leaders like Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela. It was a tragedy of the saddest kind that Gandhi was shot dead not by the British police but one of his own Indians, whom he had led to freedom. January 30, 1948 was the unfortunate day when this heinous and sinful act was committed by an ungrateful soul. The sadness of the tragedy is compounded thousands of times today because his contribution is negated by the powers that are and some leaders of the present dispensation shoot bullets at his picture and brag about it!

Yes, the inspiration for Martin Luther King who of course met a similar tragic end.

I watched the biopic with Ben Kingsley as Gandhi at least once a week when it was on cable in the 80s. I know it took liberties but what a fascinating story…and what a brutally sad ending.
