I do not see any likelihood of a return to a referral system.
For one thing, the concept of other people's actions earning you money is already built in to the earnings algorithm and, for another, there is only a finite amount of money to be allocated each month, so those without any referrals (but who are, all the same, valuable contributors) would actually lose out to those who, perhaps, contributed less in the way of useful discussion but owned a harem of users.
Actually, referral systems can work well for forums which are just starting and need new members. For older, more established forums like myLot (which has been around for 15 years, don't forget), they are much less useful because they simply pander to the people who want to turn a quick buck and are not really interested in discussion.
You could think of everyone who responds to (or even just reads) your discussions as your 'referral', in a sense, because those interactions are what earns you money (likewise, when you interact with other people's discussions, you are earning them money!). That is why it is so important here to create good and interesting discussions and to interact in a relevant and useful way with others.
