Anyone here have any Cockatiels?

I have had my Cockatiel for over a year. I love having a bird in my life again. I use to have parakeets when I was younger. I am having more fun then I ever did with my other ones but I was a young teenager at the time and was busy in school and with my friends. Plus the fact that he talks where my parakeets did not. My only problem with him is the feathers that I keep finding flying around in the house. I have no idea how to get rid of this problem without losing him. I was looking for something that would suck the feathers out of the air but no one seems to have anything like that. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have had and raised parakeets. I had one that lived nearly 20 years. He talked quite a bit. My grandma gave him to me and she lived with us at times, she taught him to talk. As for feathers, I have fostered larger birds, like parrots and cockatiels. They are incredibly messy and you can only do the best you can.

@MarieCoyle I have one of those also and it is right near my birds area. I use it a few times a day. The feather balls that fly in the air are what is driving me crazy. I know there must be something I am looking for after all, there are things for everything, how is it something I need, I cannot find.

I do not remember my parakeets being so messy but then again I was a young teenager and didn't pay attention then. Now, it is not the feathers but the puff balls that come off him. We are enjoying him a lot and I can say probably more than the ones I had as a kid. I am more aware of his actions than when I was younger.

@ramapo17 I had a hand vac, kind of like a car vac. It hung on the wall on a charger in the utility room and cleaned up many a bird feather. They aren't expensive and are true work horses.

My sister-in-law had one, but no idea what to say about the feathers. I hope someone can help you. Smart birds!

Thanks DianneN. The problem is not really the feathers but the puff balls that come off him. I have even been looking online for an electrical machine that would work. I might have to visit a pet shops as I am sure they have others that had this same question.

Been a while sinc I've had a bird as a pet. When we did, we kept them mostly in cages, which helped contain the feathers.

Mine is in a cage but the feathers fly out of it. I bought some of the tape on rolls and have it hanging. Just started it yesterday so I don't know if it is going to work.

I wonder if you put some fly paper up and drape it down would it catch the feathers Nancy. He sounds a lovely pet.

I just bought the fly paper the other day and I haven't seen any of the puff balls flying around. I don't know if it is because of the fly paper hanging things or what. Whatever, I hope they don't come back. I am still looking for a permanent solution that would go constantly. Thanks for the information.

I hope you find the help you are looking for and can keep your cockatiel. I only ever had budgerigars. Most only sang. But I did have one who dropped the F-bomb once. He was quite elderly by them, too. So even my son was surprised.

@Chellezhere We are always amazed at the things Cosmo says sometimes. He is very funny. I have only had him for a year as my grandson moved in with us last year and this was his bird. Now I have to remind him to say hello to Cosmo. The bird keeps us laughing a lot as some things he says so clearly.

@ramapo17 It was only my son and me, and we'd had that budgie since he was a few months old. So, since he was nearly thirteen and had never said anything before, we were even too dumbfounded to laugh.

Get him a stuffed one that makes noise and at least he would enjoy looking at it. Some even make noises like birds.

@Vree0937 I suggested a "stuffed animal" not a live one.

Thanks. I got the sticky fly paper rolls that I have hanging in the rooms. I haven't seen anything yet to judge if it is working or not.
