My cats are lean but it isn't cheap

Many years ago I researched cat nutrition and learned that the cheap dry cat foods are full of gross and inappropriate ingredients: remains of euthanized pets, expired meat meant for human consumption that was doused in kerosene, carcinogenic preservatives (BHA/BHT), ground corn, ground peanut hulls, wheat, corn gluten meal, etc.
I didn't know any better until I did that research but as soon as I read that stuff I immediately changed my cats' diet. I first went to Eagle Pack, then to Blue Buffalo Wilderness, and now I use Nature's Variety Raw Boost Instinct. I'm not going to lie--it is expensive. I pay $40 per 12 pound bag but it lasts me at least a month for 3 adult cats.
Why am I writing about this? Well it popped into my mind as my 3.5 year old orange tabby cat walked by me. He is a large cat but very lean. Adso is shorter and sturdier but not at all fat. Striper is ancient and a strange combination of bony and round.
I read about fat cats all the time and they always seem to be fed cheap food that is full of carbohydrates. Cats are obligate carnivores. They need meat. Their systems cannot properly digest carbs which causes them to gain weight. I won't feed my cats food that contains corn, grains, or other fillers.
Since switching over to high-protein and grain-free food I've had cats living to 15 years. Striper is at least 16 and still going. I've had 2 orange tabby males die due to heart disease at 6 years old but that is apparently a common thing with orange tabby boys. I guess we will see how long Charlie goes for.

My cats are on Purina One I think its called and its cause of my Sonny James's potty issues. He is getting elderly and starting to mainly eating canned glop. At least he is eating. If I didn't feed them this particular food I would be feeding them the prescription stuff that is really spendy and I don't think is that great in nutrition.

My house cats actually eat more dog food than cat food. I do buy the cheap stuff. But the outside cats hunt a lot too.

I use a combination of meow mix and friskies and 9 lives with my cats. All my cats are indoor cats, and seem happy and healthy. Save for joint problems (all of them are over 10 years old), and my cat Precious, lived to be 19, and he passed of kidney failure.
So, I guess it depends on what you feed the animal, and the lifestyle they live.

I'm glad you're buying good food for your cats. I hope they all live long and happy lives.
