Free Radicals and Antioxidants and Coffee

Free radicals are organic molecules that are responsible for some diseases, aging, and tissue damage. Being unstable molecules they bond with other molecules but destroy our health. They are a natural byproduct and cannot be fully eliminated. They are either formed by external factors or are formed naturally in the body in normal metabolic processes. Did you know that coffee has these and antioxidants in it? Antioxidants are substances that remove potentially damaging agents. They lower inflammation, stabilize free radicals, and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Coffee has both of these. So coffee isn't just our daily gateway to caffeine. Coffee has 200-500 milligrams of antioxidants and even micronutrients. Light roast has more than dark. Since it takes an amount of heat to extract these antioxidants out of the individual bean hot coffee is best if you are looking for the antioxidants. Cold-brew coffee would hold more caffeine. Cold-brew is lower in acid also, and better for you if you have acid reflux. Black coffee brewed hot is best with hardly any calories, carbs, or fat. It even has some niacin, potassium, and magnesium in it. It also has chlorogenic acid in it which helps the body process sugar and fat. Yah coffee! Image courtesy of Free Stock Art Photos

I have read that coffee is good for us, but even if that was not true I cannot do without my 3 cups of coffee per day. I buy Colombian coffee beans, light roast.

@LadyDuck......I agree on the light roast. I don't think I've had an Italian espresso.

Light is supposed to be best for a good, rich flavor.

I drink decaffeinated coffee. Is it the caffeine that’s good for you. I usually drink three or four cups of decaf every day.

A lot of people do. Caffeine is like everything else, everything in moderation. Coffee has other elements, not just the caffeine in it.

@RubyHawk ......That's true. I just have to remember the rule: all in moderation. Sometimes that is hard.

@celticeagle I'm one of them. Or, I should say the large ammounts in coffee. I can handle the small doeses in soda just fine, but give me a cup of decaf any day.

This is something new to learn today. I just love the aroma and taste of a good coffee, it's simply refreshing. Now I've got to try the cold brew.

I do too. Too many of the cheaper brands have a bitter flavor I don't care for. I don't think I've have tried cold brew yet. May have to too.

@ihasaquestion .......I do like a good Latte and I think that's why. No bitter flavor. All smooth and yummy.
27 Oct 21
@celticeagle I just add some sugar to the bitter ones but I agree with you. But some lattes are bitter as well, adding milk doesn't help too.

While, I like the smell of coffee, I prefer not to have a plain coffee. I would prefer to have coffee in a latte occasionally. Personally, I would like to try green tea for the caffeine and it also helps with your metabolism.

That's how I am too. Coffee by itself tastes bitter but fancy it up a bit into a Latte and I love it.

@t100068 ........Green tea is good but it has a weird after taste I don't care for so I have gotten away from drinking it.

@celticeagle I completely agree with you that coffee has a bitter taste. Personally, I think that lattes enhance the flavors of the coffee. I really like lattes and I should start drinking green tea for the antioxidants.

Yes, people even medical professionals have the mistaken idea that coffee is bad for you, however it is a healthy beverage for the most part. My grandparents were heavy coffee drinkers and lived well into their 90's.

Might be yay coffee but I am strictly a tea drinker however I used to enjoy black coffee and I do have some instant at home, If it is still good perhaps tomorrow morning I will make myself a cup of black coffee and my favourite toast and strawberry jam

We drink instant. Or we have the occasional Latte. Toast and strawberry jam does sound good.

I find that a good dark (not burned) roast tastes best for me. Maybe four cups a day here.
