Before he ever got to town

Before he ever got to town, our driver Earl, hit a deer.
The deer is dead. It was a young 8 point buck. Not sure exactly what that means, just that Earl said it.
The vehicle he was driving is disabled for now.
His boss brought another vehicle for what we needed.
Other than that little hiccup, the day went well.
On a positive note, no passengers were with him when that happened.

Yes, I feel sorry for the deer. So eight on each side, not four and four.

The thing about collisions with deer is, more often than not, we don't hit deer. The deer hit us. I know several people who were hit by deer while out in company vehicles. One was my brother. Their employers fired them for the damage the deer did to their companies' vehicles. I hope the same thing does not happen to Earl.

Getting fired for damage from a deer does not seem to happen here that I know of. Sorry for your brother.

I feel sorry for the poor deer who couldn't get out of the road in time.

He ran right into the road, while Earl was driving past. He came up out of a ditch. I am sorry for all the wildlife that suffers from traffic issues.

Poor deer but accidents happen. It’s not deers that we can hit here but dogs. Especially when we go out of the city, the road going to the countryside would have street dogs.

Occasionally a dog or cat gets hit but more often it is raccoon, or skunk, or deer.

@GardenGerty WE don't have raccoons, skunk and a deer here. We got dogs and cats. And they're the ones who often get hit here. But not in the city.

Glad he is ok. Deer seem to like to hit vehicles this time of year

@GardenGerty Oh I agree with him. My sister had one come though the windshield, hit her face, and went through the back windshield.

@LadyDuck There are many deer here but there are still hunting limits. Deer killed by cars do not count toward the limit, though. A good butcher will know if the animal is diseased.

No, he would not have had the time. I believe someone else did, though. The county sheriff has a list of people who want to claim deer that are killed this way.

@GardenGerty Only people who have a license can kill deer and wild boars. Before consuming the animals must be inspected by the local veterinary who must check if they are safe to eat. There is a maximum number of animals that can be killed, once reached no one can go hunting.

I am much like that. I feel sorrowful fall and spring when all the beasties get in the road and get hit.

I am glad there were no passengers in the car with him. Did the deer just come out of nowhere and he could not stop so he accidentally hit it?

It was still dark, around 7 a.m. and the deer came up from down in a ditch and ran into the side of the vehicle as neither the deer nor Earl saw each other in time to stop.

In some places there are signs about "deer crossing" The thing is, any open pasture or wooded area may have deer. Kansas has a lot of those areas.

I've been there. Except, in my case, the unfortunate was a doe.
Although I am a vegetarian, I am hoping that someone claimed the deer for meat.

I believe there is a standing list of people who will come out and claim a deer killed in traffic. My friend was on such a list in another county. We do know the deer got picked up quickly.
