Should a high school football team unnecessarily run up the score?

That is what a Los Angeles high school football team did. They beat another school's team in their district 106-0. District administrators are apologizing for the behavior and said they are going to investigate the matter.
I have coached both high school field hockey and lacrosse in my time as a teacher. I have always slowed the girls down if we were beating the other team by 5 goals. I would call "ice!" and they knew that they had to pass the ball 5 times before taking a shot on goal. I never wanted to unnecessarily run up the score to embarrass the opposing team. Win? Yes. Be classless about it? No.
What do you think?
A Los Angeles high school is apologizing after facing criticism that its football team didn't simply defeat an opponent but rather trounced the opposing squad by a score of 106-0.

Coaches made a big deal out of nothing by losing a football game like that. Football needs to have a mercy rule.

I agree. They have one in high school, Little League, and I think even college baseball!

@FourWalls Kids are not ready to play in games where the game is out of reach. Thank goodness bowling is limited to ten frames.

Well….there was that time when Pittsburgh Pirates announcer Jim Rooker was feeling good about his team’s chances after they scored ten runs in the first inning against the Phillies. “If we don’t win this one,” he said on the air, “I’m walking back to Pittsburgh!”
He walked back to Pittsburgh.
The bottom line is that soccer is the only aggregate team sport that I know of. They could have lost 1,060 to 0 and it still only counts as one loss. And, personally, I learned to win from all the butt-whoopings I took early in my putting career.
More significantly, the hot-shot quarterback might end up like Henry Ruggs III (threw his career away on a DUI this week), while someone on the losing team might be the MVP of Super Bowl LXIX.

I actually never thought about it that way until now. 106 to 0 is humiliating for the other team. They could have backed off a little.
