Peanuts for the Birds

And so it begins again. Time to start feeding the birds for the winter. I have seen many blue jays and doves in the bird bath recently. Time to get out the peanuts. I have ordered sunflower seeds as well. If you feed the birds in the winter, you have a better chance of them returning in the spring to raise families. They always return to where the food, water and shelter are. Hopefully that will be my backyard. This feeder is mounted sort of out and away from the deck a little. This will hopefully cut back on some of the mess they make. We will see how it works out. Photo is mine.

I doubt that would work for me. The squirrels would feast until their bellies burst. The birds would be lucky to get some shells

@CarolDM Ha, wait until they come. You will be spending big bucks on squirrel proof feeders.

It looks like an open buffet for your feathered friends to stop by and enjoy a meal.

Looks like the birds would have a great time there. If you were to start something similar here, people would come and start eating the Peanuts as they find them very very tasty. Yet I am sure that you would be capturing birds' picture for a long time in the coming days. Great share !

@CarolDM Yes - a great place for them. However, here, pigeons come uninvited and cause a lot of mess. And that is surely not enjoyable.

I didn't realize any birds would eat peanuts. We used to scatter birdfeed and watch the birds through the kitchen window but then the neighbors got a cat... We quit putting anything out to attract animals. The cat kills them and we aren't happy seeing that.

@CarolDM That one Blue Jay was really aggressive... Where do they hide the ones they carry off?

@DaddyEvil They can be aggressive. They usually go to trees. They will open the peanut with their beaks and eat the peanut without the shell of course. And they will hide peanuts if they can't eat them all.

Yes, there are tons of wild birds that love peanuts. I don't put birdseed or anything that attracts sparrows. They will kill the bluebirds and their babies in the spring. I try to keep them away if possible. Check out this video.

I did the same. I bought a big bag of peanuts and I put outside for the birds. They love, but the magpies are eating too much.

Will the bird be able to open the shell of this nut with its beak? or you peel the nuts first before giving it to the bird.

I used to throw out our bread crumbs to feed the birds. There was a park in downtown Miami that had a lot of squirrels. I used to go there and feed them peanuts. I did not know you could feed birds peanuts.

I like that feeder. I wonder if I could make something like that from things that we have around here. The squirrels we have would like it too. I give them a little something along with our feathered friends. I looked out a few minutes ago and there were birds enjoying the freshly filled feeders. I love watching them.

I used to give my parrot peanuts in-shell but then I read that the shells often have mold on them that can kill them. I stopped with the peanuts then and just stuck to the unshelled nut blends that you can get during the holiday season. I would stock up on bags after Christmas and freeze them to use throughout the year. My ekkie could get into almonds. The BG macaw got the walnuts and Brazil nuts. I don't remember if the ekkie could get into the hazelnuts. The African Grey didn't do unshelled nuts.

The wild birds shell the peanuts. And hide the ones they don't eat for later.

I used to put peanuts out, but they were unpopular and went mouldy. The other seeds were okay, but not too many birds about at the moment

I cannot keep this feeder full during the winter. They don't eat the shells. The other seeds attract sparrows and others birds I don't want to return in the spring.
