We pick up a cheap DVD player

They tell me DVDs and DVD players are pretty much a thing of the past. Now we’re settled here and have some time on our hands, I decided we should watch some of our collection. However, we couldn’t get any to play and in the end decided to pick up a second-hand player if we could. Fast forward to us going to a garage sale. This was a story in itself as there was masses of stuff on offer. We were told that the children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces of the couple had dumped all their unwanted goods there as they (the oldies) had plenty of time to sell stuff!! Anyway the guy didn’t think they had a DVD player but then the woman said they had two inside. Off she went and we bought one for $20 which was very cheap. So last night we watched The Jazz Singer, starring Neil Diamond. We’re looking forward to watching more from time to time. The photo is from Fairbridge Folk Festival in Western Australia.

@JudyEv I would have been happy to do that... if you came and picked it up in person.

Good pics. I have portable DVD player I got recently. Even though I have 3 DVD players in the house none of them seem to want to work..so I had to get another.

It's crazy how they just suddenly seem to give up the ghost.

It's good that you have other things to do - as long as they are more enjoyable.

Cool, I’m glad they’re a “thing of the past.” I have a “region-free” DVD player (meaning I can buy DVDs from Australia, such as the complete series of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, or England and watch them!). I think it’s a good thing to have one. I’ve read that the streaming services can remove any film they want, any time they want, but they can’t do that to you if you OWN The Jazz Singer!!!!

The Ghost and Mrs Muir - wasn't that a great show? But it wasn't Australian. I think you're right. I have a heap of DVDs - mostly unopened let alone ever watched.

@FourWalls My Mum thought he was pretty okay too. And fancy not releasing it. 'They' were just as bigoted as the Captain. These things were 'normal' back in those days. You can't just erase it all.

Really? Maybe you can't even buy them new here now. We hadn't checked before this one came up.

@JudyEv Their price has dropped. We have one portable with a built in screen (same as laptops), it's not bad should we decided to watch something while having lunch or dinner... we never used it!

All of our movies are DVD; and we have no intention of changing to Blu-ray or any other new fangled machine! :-)

@JudyEv We have Hulu and Discovery+ but don't watch enough to justify them...and Discovery+ has a ton of options.

I still believe in DVD players. Some things are not available for streaming; plus, having a physical copy of something means that a corporation can't just come in and take it back--something that has happened too frequently. That is true of not only movies but books as well; a certain behemoth has a rather bad track record regarding those things. While I like many new technologies, I know that there are a number of things that could easily fail. There is something to be said to have "old-fashioned" backups for things.

I agree. A good reason to hang on to 'hard copies' of whatever.

I always loved movie night with my family, we had a pretty good DVD collection. now I just use Netflix and YouTube as my media entertainment. the disc tray to my DVD player no longer works so I can't use it right now. I've never heard of The Jazz Singer, I will have to look it up!

DVDs have certainly lost popularity. The Jazz Singer was really enjoyable. A fictional but quite strong storyline and lots of Neil Diamond songs.

That's a good price. You can still get dvd players in stores, because Blu-Ray and DVD discs are still sold. However, they will eventually fade out as streaming becomes more popular.
