Update on my job hunt so far

A month ago, I trained for a week at my local high school on being a food service assistant. Yes, it was fast-paced in more ways than one. Fast to serve food to the students on the fines, fast to wash dishes and place them on the cart, and fast to send dishes and utensils through the dishwashing machine. Though the people was nice and helpful, I’ve thought I did pretty good the best I could. And even though I did get paid for it last weekend via mail, I’ve found out why I haven’t heard back from the school as a substitute from my supervisor via phone and email a little over a week ago. It was too fast-paced for me. When I asked for specifics feedback, it was more negative than positive like I was too slow washing dishes and serving the wrong meals (I dispute that remark), when I mainly washed dishes and only served twice. And it was only based on that Thursday’s training session. The only positive feedback I got from them was that everyone said I was “nice” and that the kitchen manager wanted staff to have little direction.
Yes it did hurt me and cut me to the quick. I’ve emailed my father and texted my brother on the latest. While I plan to learn from my mistakes, if I do get called in to sub in for the two middle schools and six elementary schools in the district, I plan to do better and redeem myself. If I don’t get hired or land other sub jobs by the end of the school year, I wouldn’t be too upset about it. I would find something else. Maybe it wasn’t a good fit for me, though I’ve gotten a taste of it for experience and some pay. So I’m not discounting those schools out yet and hope to get a call between now and Christmas to get me in at least or twice if possible.
Since I found out from my landlady last week that next summer’s rent would be high: $750 +30 for pet fee (if Wylie’s still around) and $22 for utilities. It’ll be over $800 as I expected, though I wasn’t planning to stay another year here and move to another apartment… my dream apartment or downsize to a studio or another place in the area.
So I’m reverting to Plan B and C. Plan B is to find my niche that might be a good fit for me. I’ve set up an in-house pet sitting service for my apartment last week and plan to do the apartment next door. I’ve also applied to three paid book reviews companies—though I’m waiting for approving on two, I got accepted on one yesterday and got started right away. I’m still sticking with Swagbucks, Inbox Dollars, CrowdTap, Mylot,Checkout 51, to earn some money on the side along with Upwork. That two-week assignment was for Amazon MTurk when I had to complete 1000 HITs on providing short reviews on sports apparel like for Nike and the NFL. It paid $150. And I’ve applied to another job, which is providing updated rental listings for a Wisconsin rental company on Facebook Marketplace. It’s only 1 hour a day, 5 hours a week, and I bid $17.50 for this 3-6 month job.
As for Plan C, by encouragement from my father and church friend, I’m going to do a short seasonal job hunt this week only by applying and re-applying to places for seasonal and regular work—around 25 places. My resume would be tweaked and updated a tiny bit. I would be hitting those places that I didn’t have a chance to apply or interview before I’ve gotten the job in September. Color Me mIne at the local mall didn’t have an opening in September, but they do now for a seasonal cashier. They’ve contacted me last week. And I’m waiting to hear back from my bus company on what hours it runs for nights/weekends, so I can provide that availability for those jobs. Though I’ve struck out with two places downtown, I’m still waiting to hear back from the art supply store that’s next to the art framing studio. It’s supposed to be opened by now, but they had electrical wiring setbacks when I visited the store two weeks ago after church. They’ll contact me when it’s open. So I’m keeping that open for the future.
That’s the story from here. Sorry so long with this update. If anything happens between now and Thanksgiving, I’ll let you know. I’ll check in again this evening.

@Courtlynn Thanks Courtney. No call for work on Wednesday before Thanksgiving break. Maybe in December.

Gee, it seemed like that cafeteria job would have been a good fit for you. They keep saying there are lots of job openings around so something should break. I personally would try a temp agency.

@KristenH What about something like proofreading? The seasonal jobs aren't a bad idea though, no long term commitment on either side.

@snowy22315 That's what my cousin said. I more or less do that for Upwork (editing, proofreading, etc.). Yeah. From now to December and December/January. Just to get me through the winter. Only time will tell.

Sorry about the negative feedback. Sounds like you are doing great job searching. Have you ever used Fiverr? It's another place that you can do gigs like upwork. I can't find much work on upwork but I used to get a lot of work on Fiverr. I was laid off from a market researcher job and virtual assistant job, I do miss working there.
I hope you hear back from one of the places you applied too, soon. It is always great to have a niche.

I've heard of them before, but never used them. I might keep them in mind. Keep going on Upwork. It's been slow since this summer and now jobs are trickling in from clients, though there's no way to close availability with their new system. I managed to get a new assignment from my current client and landed another one last week to upload apartments listings for Rentable for 5 weeks, which could become something else. Hugs for your job loss. Me too. I have to do some 7 follow-ups on Wednesday and the rest next week with my mini job hunt of 30 jobs.

You are amazing to keep going Kristen.
I am sorry that one did not work out.
Yes, write that one off, it is okay, you are not alone in being not suited for a certain job..it may have been nothing to do with your performance at all. Keep that in mind.
Much good luck and may you have a great blessing now for a better job!!

Thanks Ocean. I was hoping to get called in before Thanksgiving and I've got no calls so far. Maybe next month I would have better luck. Thanks friend. Maybe something else would pay off other than work-at-home remote jobs.

Busy you and pro-active, too. I have had not so nice dealings with school districts. I've not found them to be kind. You are not a robot so yeah, you might not be as fast as they like. I can't do warehouse work cause I am not fast enough and I for sure can't do quick repetive tasks with my hands. Let alone stand on my feet for hours while being a quick little bunny. God bless you as you make your way in the world.

I know what you mean. Amazon was floated by the father two weeks ago But they require you to carry 50 pounds or more when I can't do that with my back (only 10 pounds), or operate heavy machinery. Though I read the picker position is the easiest and boring, it's at the bottom of my list. Thanks Lenore.
