Vince's makeshift studio

My husband is a keen photographer and we take photos at horse endurance rides in Western Australia. The season has finished for the summer so Vince has offered to take portraits of any couples in the lifestyle village where we live. We thought some might like a portrait to give to their children at Christmas perhaps. We’re not charging for these although we sell our endurance ride photos. We concocted a ‘studio’ of sorts in the garage. As you can see from the photo, there is plenty of room and it worked quite well. We ran a wire rope across the ceiling and draped a black cloth from this as the backdrop. Then it was just a matter of setting up the lights and he was ready to go.

Looking good but you might want to set up an artificial tree or potted plant on a stand to add some interest to the photos. That black dropcloth is a bit stark.

Thanks for the suggestion but the photos are mostly just the one/two heads with the black background.

Vince is a perfectionist when it comes to his photography. How is his website? He deserves to be known with all these amazing photos.

We do quite well for the sale of the endurance ride photos. We don't take photos of many other things.

@JudyEv This is a good time of the year to have it set up, people can include photos in their Christmas cards.

I'm glad I'm not the only person to use the term "takers". I was a bit worried I'd need to explain it.

We had about five couples interested but some are too busy at the moment. It doesn't take long to set up so we'll just deal with each couple as they come.

This looks very professional. You have a big garage, ours is smaller.

@JudyEv We have a closed garage for one car and a big carport. It's fine now as we have only one car. I do not drive.

It is a double garage but the 4 wheel-drive only just fits in lengthwise.

One couple came yesterday and there are about 4 or 5 more but they're all too busy at the moment. Luckily, it's pretty easy to put up and down.

@JudyEv Oh, nice... I hope they don't all show up at once so you guys get overwhelmed. They'll have some nice photos to share with their families.

@Nawsheen Yes, he still does that. Mostly they are small affairs and often called 'challenges' rather than competitions.

@rebelann The folk here don't seem to mind being photographed. At the lunches and get-togethers, they seem quite happy to pose for a quick photo. But I know a lot of people will try to avoid the camera.

@crazyhorseladycx It's hard to get workmen at the moment. Everyone says so. We would like some outdoor blinds but they're saying it will be February before they can be done.

We have to keep it tidy to fit the two cars in. When we first moved it took a month or two before we could fit the cars in as we were busy constructing flatpack wardrobes, etc.

He doesn't want to do weddings. We've had four or five couples ask about the photos. It's just a hobby, not a money-making venture.

Thanks but it's no skin off our nose and Vince gets to do what he loves. And he welcomes the practice and chance to try new lighting techniques or whatever. As a model, I get a bit bored after the first 50 shots.

@DocAndersen Thanks. Within the village people are really generous. One brings back day-old leftover bread from her charity; others deliver it is you can't get to the house to pick it up; people will walk dogs for you; water plants when you're away so it all works out.

We already charge for photos from the horse endurance rides and there really aren't any expenses with these. It's just a service for the village where we live now. It will come back in goodwill.
