Friendship is not a luxury, it is a need. We cannot live a full life without a friend. All of us are a mysterious mixture of needs. One of the needs we have which often goes unfulfilled is the need to be able to express ourselves fully with an openness that allows us to be true to ourselves. We have so many problems that go unattended because we do not have anyone to talk to. When we are fortunate enough to have a friend who is highly trusted, many of our problems are already solved to a great degree. The reason why many of us have trouble finding a friend is that we feel we cannot trust anybody. This is self-deception, if we are open and frank. Friendship demands mutual trust. It is not a one-way deal. The man who expects to be loved without giving in return will be sorely disappointed.
