Oh, JJ knew this one was coming. He probably didn’t think it’d be this low on the countdown of favorite songs with “island” in the title, but he knew it’d be here. So did @JoyDorsey , to whom this countdown is dedicated because of all her cruises. So did everyone else. Lookie who’s here…. #7: Island Girl - Elton John I know everyone is only shocked by the fact that this is showing up this low on the countdown. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it. Jamaican woman turns to prostitution in New York City thanks to “de racket boss” in this song, one of Elton’s shorter tunes (clocking in at 3:45, if I remember the album label correctly…not that I read those things or anything….). Oh, and here’s a funny note about the album notes: one of the backup singers on this song was listed as “Ann Olson.” That was Elton. Elton sort of replaced himself at #1 with this song. The song this knocked out of the top spot in 1975 was “Bad Blood,” Neil Sedaka’s song with Elton singing backup. This was the apex of Elton’s ownership of the 1970s.
