Problems of left handed people

December 1, 2021 4:38pm CST
Hello, I’ve read that left handed people are more prone to accidents or have a harder time doing physical work because most objects were designed for right handed people. I’ve been adjusting pretty well so far ( no choice!) however I’ve found out I have a hard time writing with ring binders since they get in the way of my writing hand. I tried reversing it but it’s too awkward. And taking the pages and putting it back in the binders too cumbersome Any suggestions on how to get around this problem? For the lefties out there, What are your challenges being left handed? How did you overcome them?

Not many people know this about me, but I am a bit of both. I am a left handed person as well as a right hand one. You just need to adjust and balance and you'll be fine.

@NatsuYeung Use a computer. It's faster and you can type with both hands. Problem solved..

@ihasaquestion hahaha. Of course. There are sometimes though that I hand write personal notes. “Old school” habits :D

Thanks. Writing with ring binders is one of those things I have a hard time adjusting Maybe I’ll stick with regular notebooks! ??

This is why I am so glad I am ambidextrous. Hillarious in exams to be writing with both hands and an invigilator walks past slightly perplexed as to how I am doing that. I've always been this way though so I can't really give any tips on how I use both hands.

A problem for wannabe surgeons, too. The operating table is designed for right-handed surgeons, I gather. But if there's a will, there's a way. Be ambidextrous.

@NatsuYeung Nope. There's a positioning to be followed.

Nah, if you’re the surgeon you’re in charge everybody else adjusts! Lol

@eileenleyva yes, surgeon near the head, 1st assist across, 2nd assist to the side of surgeon, 3rd assist to the side of first assist, nurse to the feet of or table her assist (if there are any) to nurse's side. the surgeon is the one operating and is responsible for the patient so his comfort and efficiency is first priority if he says he has to switch places with his first assist or 2nd assist they must comply. if you insist- the surgeon can boot you out of the operation and probably get penalized for insubordination.

Thanks. Don’t know about that though. Maybe we’re gifted at adjusting to a right handed world? Lol

Two of the biggest challenges here in the States occur in schools. There are left-handed desks, but one classroom may have one or two, and nine times out of ten, they are occupied by right-handed students who refuse to budge, and the teacher does nothing to get them to move. The other challenge is scissors. There are left-handed scissors. They have padded handles, and because of that, right-handed students grab them up as well. I was almost always allowed to use non-spiral composition books. But, whenever a teacher preferred spiral notebooks, I flipped the book over and wrote from back to front. And when it came to three-ring binders, I removed the paper from them, set the binder aside, and put the paper back into the notebook when I finished writing. Being left-handed in this right-handed world does cause us to be a bit accident-prone and have a bit of a learning disability (because we have to do things backward and with right-handed tools). Using your left hand, pick up a butter knife that has a serrated edge, and you will not see it because the notches will be facing out (away from you). That's because the knife (like most knives) is right-handed. Look more closely at a steak knife blade, and you will see that it is right-handed as well. Manual can openers are also not left-handed. The list goes on and on. But because we have become so accustomed to using right-handed tools, some lefties don't fully realize how disabling right-hand tools can be. When I am struggling with something (which happens more and more as my eyesight continues to dim), I ask a right-hander or my son, who is ambidextrous, to do it instead.

True. That’s what I do with the binders right now although I can’t help but think that there must be a better way! Lol In my high school the left handed chairs/desk were kept in a room and you can always go there to get one if you need it. I also wanted to learn the guitar but gave up on it because I couldn’t adjust. People I knew were also right handed so they didn’t know how to teach for left handed guitar playing or using a left handed guitar.

@NatsuYeung, learning to play the guitar left-handed can be done. But it is hard when right-handed people don't understand that we need to see it upside down. Are you familiar with Jimi Hendrix? He was a left-handed guitar virtuoso, who instead of buying a left-handed guitar, turn a right upside down and played it that way.

@Chellezhere yes I am. I’m familiar with left handed guitars and learning to play the guitar left handed but the ones I asked to teach me are right handed and we both have a hard time adjusting

Maybe better to embrace her left handedness I sometimes eat with my left hand sometimes with my right. The drinking glass though is usually on the left. :)

@Faster16 ah I see. Good luck with your child. It takes a lot of patience on both sides and it can get frustrating at times.

Not very true I am lefty, I can only write lefty, but everything else I use my right hand. It's not because of u being left handed, if your clumsy I am. An I can do physical projects. But I get overwhelmed with more then one thing.at same time, I am adhd aswell. So if this is happening to u, accident prone clumsy, an can't finish started projects. Or get anxious an overwhelmed. An can only do 1 thing at a time, u may be adhd. An or, libido is off. An u can have libido issues as a child aswell.it don't have any thing to do with leftys at all. There are many intelligent ppl who are lefthand. Also you may have chemical imbalance that cause u to be accident prone. Your ears have alott 5o do with balancing. Aswell.i learned from a ent dr. Hope this helps, have a great Christmas
