This countdown is dedicated to @NJChicaa , who’s the biggest Parrothead here in myLot land. I mean, I love Jimmy Buffett, I’ve seen him five times and met him twice, but I’ve got nothing on the queen of Margaritaville! So, for her I’m presenting the original versions of songs that Buffett has covered during his career. And, I should note, these are songs that Buffett recorded, because he does a lot of covers in concert that he doesn’t end up recording. Anyway, let’s get going. #10: Mexico - James Taylor There are a lot of songs that it sort of “makes sense” to see Buffett cover. This is one of them. James Taylor’s humorous tune about a vacation paradise (“I’ve never really been so I don’t really know”) could only be more perfect for Buffett if Buffett changed “Mexico” to “Key Largo.” This was a good-sized hit for Taylor in 1975. Mexico Written by James Taylor Recorded by James Taylor From Gorilla, 1975 Covered by Buffett on Barometer Soup, 1995 With the sun sinking low:
James Taylor performs Mexico live at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio July 7, 1979.

I wanna see where Biloxi is. He covered that, right? Did he and Steve Goodman co-write Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw? My wires are getting crossed.

Yes, he covered it. Yes, it’s on the list, right where it should be. No, he didn’t write “Why Don’t We Get Drunk” with Goodman. They co-wrote “Door Number Three” together, as well as “Woman Going Crazy on Caroline Street.” Buffett took full responsibility for “Wy Don’t We Get Drunk”….under the pseudonym Marvin Gardens.

How have I missed these songs all my life. Always loved James Taylor, not as big a fan of Jimmy Buffett though.

Aren’t you lucky that none of these songs are Jimmy Buffett’s?

oh my as a former resident of Parrot Head-land (Cincinnati Ohio) this will get me the blasphemer title, but I like JT's version more than the original.

To me, there’s not a lot of difference. It’s not like Buffett turned “Highway to Hell” into a Margaritaville-style song here.

A song which suited both artists styles I thought. Buffett pays tribute to Taylor several times in the song.
