At 2:15 AM on Monday, December 16, 1811, a 6.7 to 8.1 (Kids, I don't have time to explain The Richter Scale, so just ask one of your Californian friends) Earthquake struck New Madrid, Missouri. I wasn't in Missouri that day. I was in Baltimore, working on a real estate deal, but I did read all about it in the papers a few days later. That's how long it took the news to get to the East Coast in those days. The biggest thing that happened was the Mississippi River ran backwards for a while. We could probably talk about that all day but we can't because we have other things to get to. Mostly, the relief you must feel knowing that the Holidays are all but completely over this year because there are some serious party-supply shortages coming up. Wine and Spirits, Chicken Tenders, Maple Syrup, Fresh Produce and Cream Cheese are all going to be very hard to find in the very near future. If the expert predictions are correct. And OK, most of those items don't matter much. But Wine And Spirits matter so much that you should be panicking right now. But not as much as you would be if there was still a lot of the holidays left.

Didn’t you help Michael McDonald write the song “Livin’ on the Fault Line” right after that happened?? I went there one year. There’s a sign that says “You are standing on the New Madrid fault.” It couldn’t have been because it wasn’t shaking. I saw that Kraft is paying people to NOT make cheesecake this year because of the cream cheese shortage. Gee, what’s going on in Philadelphia??? Get those cream cheese makers off strike and back to work!!!

Yes, and you'll notice I didn't even take any credit for it. I write songs because I enjoy it, not for the fame or glory or money. If it isn't shaking, they should at least have the decency to hang an Out Of Order sign on it. I heard something about that. I think it was $20 and I want to know how they can afford to pay everyone. But I'm not complaining. Well, not much. I was planning on making 25,000 cheesecakes so I'll cheerfully take their check for $500,000, and keep my snide comments to myself.

It is true. And it happened a couple of years ago, too, only from a hurricane instead of an earthquake.
