Thoughts on Depression

Thinking over my life since my BFF passed yesterday and I think that depression has been a major part of most of my life.
I have had depression most of my life. For as long as I can remember. When I was a teenager I could sleep 12 to 14 hours and now I think a lot of the reason was that I was depressed. In the 90's I was diagnosed with major depression with panic attacks. There were many family issues going on at that time and I was the head of the family so I had to hold it together. I had PTSD for a period of time also after leaving my ex-husband. So, basically, I was/am a mess. I have gotten panic attacks so badly that I got hives and was so nauseated I was sure I would get sick. Holding down a full-time job was difficult. I also had guardianship of my granddaughter for several years and she had issues. (That is an entirely different subject for another time.)
I had trouble finding an anti-depressant that worked too. (That is the major issue with mental issues. Finding the right medication or treatment.) I even had a DNA test to show which type of anti-depressant would be best for me. This wasn't very successful. The only one that really helps is Remeron. I have been taking it for fifteen years or more. One other one but I can't take it for very long due to side effects.
Over the years I have been able to understand when I am becoming overly depressed and have found several things I can do to help myself. I think that being aware of your body and changes in it is all-important. Same with the panic attacks. Scary but something I have learned to live with.

I wish I had people to talk to. Friends have moved away, neighbors aren't much, etc.

@celticeagle sorry to hear. I don't have many friends to talk too. It's ok. We can live without talking with them. Try to occupy your mind in something or other. Take care

I've been dealing with depression (and anxiety and ptsd) since I lost custody of my daughter at 15 because of her "father" abusing her at 3 months old. It's terrible to have and neither medicine or therapy has ever really helped. So I deal with it all the best I can on my own, and with kind friends listening.

If a person has major depression I don't think there is a pill that will help much. Sorry to hear of your trials and hope things are better for you now.

I suffer from severe depression myself. It’s taken years to find the right medication mix and I’m currently receiving intensive mental health services through our county mental health services. It takes a lot of work but Ives seen people recover!

Again, I am sorry for the loss of your BFF. It makes it even harder that it's the holidays. You are able to come forward and discuss your depression, which is good. There are many here, including myself, that suffer from this condition. I am totally helped by the two meds that I am on and am eternally grateful for that. I wish you only the best. I hope as time goes on the grief will become easier to bear.

Depression is rather common. I just wish mine wasn't major.

The main thing is, you're aware of it. You're doing the best for you, and you're doing your best to not allow it to stop you from living your life. All very good things.

Right now I don’t know if I have depression or anxiety. I’m seeing a clinician at the VA. Prozac seems to help the panic attacks to some degree, except this time of year (I get “the blues” or whatever you want to call it twice a year, and around Christmas is one of them).
I pray you can find something successful to help. It’s a long, long road, and there are many potholes in the road.

It is common to get the "blues" this time of year. At least you know it is coming and maybe plan to do some things you enjoy this and the other time you get blue. And, keeping busy helps too.

Sorry for your loss and I know who difficult it can be, Virtual hugs, When I lost my husband four years ago I fought so hard to control my anxiety and my grief, It still feels like it just happened yesterday but what i do to help myself when I feel overwhelmed, I walk to the mirror and look at myself and I say you know there are many in this world worse off than you, You will one day meet him again and in the meantime you have to just go on living, Soon I get myself together and it seems to work for me, In other words I distract my thoughts as best as I can,

I'm glad you have a good talk with yourself and it works for you. Distraction is good.
