The Zen master, Dozen Doshen, was riding his bicycle along the road, when a cat run out in front of him.
He swerved to miss it, and he fell off his bicycle, and he scratched his hands, and knees, a bit too.
He said,
"I was cat-free, until I caught a cat, but to be cat-free again, I must become more observantly awake, and open to a cat crossing my path like this."
"I must master more my zen, as that cat mastered me here."
"Zen is not to be found in certain locations, but it can be lost in certain locations, it seems."
"I must not lose my Zen, at any time, from here on in,"
he said to himself now.
"I must keep listening to the inner sound of Zen, and not be distracted by the outer sounds of life."
Just then, another Zen master walking by, who had seen the whole incident, remarked dryly.
"What is the sound of Zen?"
Then, he laughed loudly, and walked on.

the sound of zen, the sound the last ripple in a pond makes.

Perhaps the sound of Zen can only really be heard by the heart of love.

@innertalks the sound or lack of sound is in everything. when we listen with our whole being it is there.

@DocAndersen Yes, I would agree with that, even as the Bible says that if we love God with our whole being, then God is there for us too.

I think Zen masters take everything as a fact of life and move on.
They are least perturbed by the highs and lows in life as they alternate.
A physical fall helps them rise higher in their Zen, reminds them they are still human with human "fallibilities" though a fall does not fall in this category!

Yes, even a Zen master must also breathe the same air, as the rest of us do too.

@Shiva49 Yes, I have heard that some spiritual masters give out lollipops to the masses, rather than any of their real teaching, and so are guilty of prejudging some who genuinely, or not, come to them too, in the hope of receiving some real truths.
The Bible tells us that if someone asks us for truth, we should not give to them a scorpion instead, of which, some of these "higher" masters give out, to their adorers/followers.

@innertalks Yes, then only they can really connect with the hoi polloi.
Some spiritual masters talk down on the ordinary folks who are obviously weighed down by the challenges of daily lives while for them it is a life of abstinence, at least outwardly, and what they preach.
They need to climb down from their high horses to connect with all.
