Don't thank me for my service

January 15, 2022 9:19pm CST
I just got off a discussion from another social media site regarding veterans in the united states. There was someone who posted. He was a combat veteran who did a few tours abroad. He said that he never really feels comfortable whenever someone "thanks him for his service". He says he joined the military for the pay and for the opportunity to get a higher education not to "serve the nation". it was just a job to him. other veterans posted too. one even saying that he had "no idea what the hell they were thanking me for", others say that thanks should only be for veterans who have seen combat. what do you guys think about this? Should we automatically thank veterans and military for their service or should we first try to find out how they feel about it?

Reguardless of the reason they joined, our veterns do a lot for our country. Many of them, don't realize what their time in our forces has done for our country. Weather you're a cook, a recurter, have a desk job. Never see combat. Each job a person does in our miltery help make it run. Without every officer, we would not have the successes we have today. Reguardless of how a person might feel, it's a kindness to thank them. If they find issue, I kindly remind them, no matter their reason, they played a part to ensure we are free to complain, to do what we do. Quite frankly, since 2020, I've felt the U.S. has started to lose what it stood for. What our brave men and women fought for. So, it's no wonder there's a trend going on where people lose sight of what their service means for others. So the feelings are understandable. I for one am proud of those who served. My husband never saw combat, but he tought people how to fly planes. He helped give someone else the skills to do good for our country. I am proud to know him, and he is proud of his service. It's people like him who remind me, thanking our veterns are never a bad thing.

I think it's a good idea to thank the military for their service. Whatever their motive, they still protected us.

My grandson is in the Army and it makes him feel good when someone thanks him for his service.

Too many feelings running loose these days. If a person serves in the military, they have served their country, regardless of the reason why they chose to serve. That service, even if it wasn't combat, helped in the defense of the country. So, civilians are just showing appreciation to those that help keep them safe and secure. It's natural to thank a person that would put their life on the line for others.
