My last post was about a restaurant we revisited after a gap of about 25 years. It was staffed by high school students and some we got to know quite well. One told us that she and her classmates, in their final year and in their final week, had coloured their school’s swimming pool. It was the norm for students to do something silly in their final days. Some of the pranks were pretty stupid but harmless; others were not so harmless and potentially expensive to fix – like writing messages on grass ovals with weed-killer. My husband was bursar at a private school and he was worried that his school might ‘copy-cat’ our young friend’s idea. If it happened and his school pool was coloured, it would have to be pumped out and cleaned, etc. After our chat at the restaurant, he put guards on the pool for the final week. I don't have a swimming pool photo so here's another sunset.

There were kids in my class that streaked around the football field... thankfully, not when there was a game going on and they didn't get caught.

Some pranks are pretty harmless; others not so much.

@DaddyEvil I remember hearing about streakers in my time too - though I don't think it was from my school. There's no way I would do that - not even on a double dog dare .

Oh gosh, I remember the pranks of our days. Kids tried to take those restaurant mascot statues - like Ronald McDonald or Big Boy - not school property and they'd get in big trouble for that. That was smart to put the pool guards on - yah, you never know what kids can do .

It's better to be on the alert to stall the pranks.

It is beyond me why the students did those stupid things to their school in their final days.Is it a form of emotional release ?

I suppose it is. Their last chance to cut loose. It's hard to imagine why they'd do this really.

That was a good plan. Yes colouring the pool water seems harmless enough, but still expensive and a lot of hassle to put right!

@JudyEv That certainly would have taken an age! And wasted a whole lot of water too.

It was an Olympic size pool so held a lot of water, so it would have been quite a procedure, both to let out the water, and to refill again.

Thanks. He really believed that kids at schools would copy-cat the idea.

Haha - I think 'duty of care' and all that rot was well and truly in by then.

It was the 'tradition' for such pranks to be played towards the end of year.
