Alba Carolina Fortress is the most important tourist attraction in Alba Iulia, Romania. Built during the years 1714-1738, it is considered the most representative bastion fortification of the Vauban type in Romania, or even in southeastern Europe.
The fortress is a star-shaped fort, with thick walls, with seven bastions. The walls of the fortress are built of brick, quarry stone or the ruins of the Roman fortress, their thickness being at the base 3m, and at the top 1.20 m. The walls are supported by buttresses to neutralize the thrusts of the earth. The impressive construction is surrounded by defensive ditches.
