The Troubled Young Man

I take paying guests and I've had a lot of interesting people to stay.
One young man seemed very pleasant and once he'd settled in asked if he
could talk to me. I said yes of course, and he told me he'd just been
released from a psychiactric hospital. He'd been compulsorily detained
there for 2 months.
He said he'd been depressed and tried to take his own life, but wanted
to make clear that he was no threat to me, just to himself.
He wasn't ready to go to his own home just yet and thought that staying at
my place would give him the breathing space he needed.
If I'd known this before he came I might not have been too keen to have him
- how wrong that would have been.
He was an intelligent and bright young man who'd taken a wretched path.
He just needed a non-judgemental listener - I was happy to fill that role.
He'd booked for a week but stayed an extra few days and I was so pleased
that he left in a happier state of mind than when he'd arrived.
Sometimes all that's required is to listen.
I wrote this after reading Ocean Tiara's post about the outrageous fees her psychotherapist charged just to listen to her.
Here is the bill or amount charged for my sessions with my listener.(as you see above image) I call them a listener, because that is all they do. They are not...

I picture your place to be one of peace and serenity especially with your beautiful garden. How fortunate that young man picked your place to stay and having you to listen. Listening is a virtue and sometimes that's all that's required. Glad he left on a happier note

I am glad you were not frightened at the idea to have someone like this young man as your guest.
I agree that sometimes all that's required is to listen. People are often ready to complain, but never ready to listen to the problems of the others.

Everybody needs a good listener today , with no judgement , just an ear to listen. I remember my late cousin ,

Sounds like the kind and caring soul I have known you to be.
You have a lot of beautiful flowers for people to enjoy while they are there too.

At the start, you never had thought he was such a person. You have a heart of gold, listening to him patiently helped him a lot with his disease. This was why he stayed an extra few days .

What, you didn't charge him $255 an hour?? You could have gotten rich at his expense ..... well, you never would do that anyway.
I read her post too and now I wonder just what those psychotherapists do besides listen. Take notes I'm sure but do they provide any solutions?

A listening ear is the best one who is in turmoil could have. I am glad you filled that role Janet!

I believe that people are put in our path for a reason. Thank you for listening to this young man and helping him to see a brighter day.

So glad you could offer that breathing space. Often having a non-biased listener is very helpful.

What beautiful flowers! What are they called?
I'm glad he found a "transition" place before he rejoined his family.
