We've had a busy morning

I’m off for a shower and possibly a nap shortly. We’ve been at my brother-in-law’s place helping take down the old patio. Some was taken down a day or two ago and we finished it today. It is time it was replaced as, once we got the last horizontal down today, the two uprights fell over. The uprights were sitting in metal ‘stirrups’. On one, the wood had rotted out at the bottom while the stirrup of the other had corroded away. Two nephews helped with the heaviest work so it’s all done now and ready for the builder. I’m sure it will look lovely when it’s finished. We haven’t anything special on now but we do need to catch up with some old friends. Now might be a good time to do it.

You make it sound like it was almost ready to come down by itself. I'm glad you all got it down without anyone getting hurt.

@JudyEv I've seen things like that before. It just needed a bump in the wrong place and everything would have tumbled down.

@DaddyEvil It would have needed a really good bump - or a part removed. I wouldn't have called it dangerous.

It was certainly time it was replaced although it looked solid enough. I guess every bit was holding up other bits.

I am glad you finished, that was a hard job and dangerous, as accidents may happen.

We took a lot of precautions as we went. We were aware of the dangers but of course being aware doesn't necessarily prevent accidents.

@JudyEv You are right, sometimes there is something we could not expect or plan.

@LadyDuck We didn't expect the uprights to be rotten and to break off at the base.

Yes, there will have to be a patio-warming once the new one is up.

When you've rested, it's just a short, well, maybe not so short, trip here to NC to help me with my fence.

@JudyEv I know what you mean. We just hired a lawn service to mow the yard. I cannot run the mower for more than a few minutes because of my arthritis. K has been doing the mowing but finally told me she was ready to hire someone.

@DWDavis Vince had a major scare recently and, while he's okay now, he does get exhausted really easily. Many things are now much more taxing than they once were.

Haha - we need to do it before we're too much older. We're fast running out of steam.

@wolfgirl569 So true. I did think about that as I wrote it. And 'knocked up' is another we use in 'we knocked up a cupboard the other day'.

I'm glad that project is done. Will you be watching the Super Bowl tomorrow? Do you get that type of programming from the US?

It's amazing how much you can get done when a few get together. There is always a lot of discussion first but everyone has good ideas. Once we get started we know exactly what we're doing - well, mostly!!

As I said, you can bring your tools to my house anytime. I’m glad you got that done before a disaster. That’s why I had that crawl space work done: one rotted board can be a huge problem later. Oh, if that hadn’t been a “controlled” fall of the uprights! You enjoy a nice cool beverage. You’ve earned it!!!

We didn't realise the rest of the pergola/whatever was pretty much holding up the uprights. At least it has proven that it's time for a replacement.

With some tasks, it is good to get them out of the way. The brother-in-law has more to do but none of it is really heavy work. He can do it at his time a bit at a time
