Shanny’s random thoughts #4 : Our 5 senses

When my stepson and son got coronavirus 6 months ago they both lost part of their sense of taste and completely lost their sense of smell.
Their sense of taste returned within a month but they still have no sense of smell at all.
This led to my random thought yesterday that if so much of the population that have gotten corona have lost their sense of smell as a species over time will our bodies evolve into strengthening one of our other senses?
I really hope I never lose my sense of smell it gives me such anxiety thinking about it.
Photo is unrelated to the post. It’s an old cup from Germany my husband bought at a flea market.

There have been times that I would have loved losing my sense of smell...
"Our sense of smell in responsible for about 80% of what we taste. Without our sense of smell, our sense of taste is limited to only five distinct sensations: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and the newly discovered “umami” or savory sensation. All other flavours that we experience come from smell." Excerpt taken from:

@shaggin I grew up in a family with 16 kids. I guarantee I would have loved having no sense of smell for a lot of those years!

Sometimes my breathing is so bad, I start wondering if I have some how caught Covid. But then I notice I can still smell and taste things and my anxiety subsides

@bunnybon7 my daughter didn’t lose her sense of smell for a few days when she has Covid. Her sense of smell returned quickly we well. My niece never lost her sense of smell at all. But my son and stepson both haven’t gotten their sense of smell back

@Courtlynn that’s what I’ve always heard but I don’t think it’s true for people who just have poor vision I think it’s only for people who are actually blind. My father in law and his mother were born without a sense of smell. I don’t think any of his other senses made up for it

@Dracey I’m not sure if their smell will ever return. I know a lot of people who a year later still can’t smell. I just on Facebook a few days ago a woman I’m friends with said her friend got corona two years ago and she still can’t smell and the doctor told her she probably never will again.

Interesting question and I guess the answer is who knows? Did they get their taste and smell back? The former Gov. of this state had Corona, and six months later he still had no sense of taste or smell. Bummer!

@snowy22315 nope 6 months and neither one can smell anything still. I saw on Facebook a woman said her friend got corona two years ago and she still can’t smell and the doctor told her she probably never will again.

Wow is this something they will get back or not? I don’t know what I would do without my sense of smell at times .

@Tina30219 I’m guessing they probably won’t get that sense back sadly. Everyone I have heard that has lost it longer then a month or two has never regained it. Some it’s been a year or more.

@judyev oh gosh I never even thought about how awful it would be not to be able to smell food to see if ir has gone bad. That is such a good point. I can’t usually tell by the smell if a milk is old but I can tell after I’ve consumed it when I have to run to the bathroom soon after
That stinks yours doesn’t have the top. The top is what makes it neat I think.
