Hi guys, Hope you all are doing good and enjoying your weekend with family. I am doing good too. Today is "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti" in India which is celebrated every year in India generally on 21st March but as per the Gregorian Calendar it's celebrated today on 19th February. It's the Birth Anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj a great person who founded the Maratha Empire in India in 17th century. He was born in 1630 A.D. from Jijabai. While growing up he saw that there was lot of injustice and inequality in society against the Hindu community. He thus founded the Maratha Empire and wanted the Hindus to held their heads high, be confident and fearless in life. He was a great warrior who fought a lot of battles in India. He is regarded as one of the bravest rulers of India who was responsible for standing up against Aurangzeb, the Mughal Emperor. His contributions is much celebrated in Maharashtra. I thought to share it here. I hope you find this information interesting. Have a good weekend. Take care!!!

Shivaji was a great king. He was brave and fought well with the Muslim leader at that time. We read about his bravery in the books. His sons sacrificed but didn't accept the slavery of Muslims.

A great personality. He was in fact one of the initial warriors to start the guerilla warfare technique. Plus while seeing many travel shows covering Coastal Maharashtra, I came to know that Shivaji Maharaj got many big forts along the coastline as well as being instrumental in building a strong Navy. In fact, some European historian wrote that if he had lived a little longer, British would not have been able to make much inroads into India at least for a major part of the 18th century.

@Rashnag Yes but in truth, many people say that they are the followers of Shivaji Maharaj but in truth, they often use it for wrong purposes.

He is the man who should be given the credit for Gurella warfare. A great personality and an inspiration for generations to come. I wish our History books were not so biased and such personalities got their due, unlike the huge weightage that handful ones enjoy in our History books. Well, we have pages and pages written about few and just a line or a paragraph for such great ones.

Ok, so is the event celebrated with food/ dishes? I'm from Kerala (based in UK) and we celebrate Onam every year in August/September and the traditional dish is rice with 18 set of curries on a banana leaf.

I was fascinated with his escape from Aurangzeb's prison. LOL Damn smart. Unfortunate that his son was killed so cruelly.
