Yesterday I got my glasses fixed. It was later in the day and I didn’t want to get stuck in traffic going to the gym, so I walked near the optical shop that made the glasses. As cold as it was, I think that should count as double the exercise! Today I continue on with another song with “poor” in the title, and a person that “everybody” knows….about.
#7: A Poor Man’s Roses (Or a Rich Man’s Gold) - Patsy Cline
I’ve got a head full of feeling higher
And an earful of Patsy Cline
There is just no one who can touch her
Hell, I’ll hang on every line
(Jimmy Buffett, “Miss You So Badly”)
See ya tomorrow.
You know, the historians argue about whether “Gone” by Ferlin Husky or “Four Walls” by Jim Reeves started the “Nashville Sound.” This song, although nowhere near as popular as either of those songs, should be in the mix. If you listen to this, today (never mind 1957), you’ll agree there’s not a dang thing “country” about it.
Patsy Cline, today, is considered one of the superstars of the Nashville Sound. If that dramatic shift in country music hadn’t come along when it did I don’t know how successful she would have been. (Consider Charline Arthur, who predated Patsy by 4-5 years, with a similar voice and style, is one of those people who came along at the wrong time to be successful.)
But it’s all conjecture. It was the Nashville Sound era, and Patsy was there, and the rest is wonderful history.
A Poor Man’s Roses (Or a Rich Man’s Gold)
Written by Bob Hilliard and Milton DeLugg
Recorded by Patsy Cline
Released as a single, 1957
He’s callous and cold:

@xander6464 — yep. He also said, “Give me another toke,” but not to Patsy.

Carl Smith was my dad’s favorite. I always had a Carl Smith song for my dad’s ringtone.

@FourWalls I like Patsy Cline, the Everly Brothers and Shania Twain. I'm sure there are a couple more; but I can't think of them right now.

@LindaOHio — I guess I’ll just keep posting country music until I find those couple of others.
