Hi guys, Hope you all are doing good and hope your weekend went great. I am doing good too. I came across this news so thought to share it here. Back in 1999, the UNESCO declared 21st February, as "International Mother Language Day". It is a worldwide annual observance in order to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also aims to promote multilingualism. Knowing one's mother tongue is very important in different cultures and religions. It gives a different identity to people from across the world. The benefits are the children gets to feel rooted if they are aware of their mother tongue. It helps in getting employment opportunities as in locally, it helps to boost one's confidence, higher success in learning second languages and the communication with own culture is better. My mother tongue is Gujarati as I live in Gujarat state in India and I am proud of it. Some of the most spoken languages in the world are as follows:- 1). English - 1.132 million people 2). Mandarin - 1.117 million people 3) Hindi - 615 million people 4). Spanish - 534 million people 5). French - 280 million people 6). Arabic - 274 million people 7). Bengali - 265 million people 8). Russian - 258 million people 9). Portuguese - 234 million people 10). Indonesian - 194 million people I hope you find this information interesting. I was intrigued to know about it. Have a good day!! Share your mother tongue here. Take care!!!

That's a lovely information. Linguistic intelligence is so interesting to read about. Most of our Indian fellows are multilingual and that's amazing. I can talk fluently in Hindi, English, Maithali, Magahi and Bhojpuri. I understand and speak Kannada, Punjabi, and Bengali.

@Rashnag Yes, I am good at picking up languages. These all I have picked up by staying in different places and talking to people.

Wow ! Those are interesting statistics! But I wonder with a good number of Gujaratis (especially Patels) in UK and US and even in Kenya etc, Gujarati language might also be in the toppers list (may be top 15). Anyways, this is a good initiative and perhaps something to preserve many language dialects that are on the verge of extinction or being neglected.

I've never heard of this before. It's very good to know your mother tongue. I speak English as my mother tongue, and I know a little French. I'm also trying to learn Welsh. Bore da. (That's good morning in Welsh).
